I am in possession of a Ekegren pocket watch from the estate off a deceased great uncle. As with a lot of these it is engraved for JE Caldwell & Co, Philadelphia.

I have only just started my research, but am yet to find an image of a watch with similar colouring to the hour numerals.

It is labelled as 18k and a serial number of 18282.

I have noted from this, and other forums that there should be another serial number on the mechanism, but I cannot see one. Only a patent date of Feb 5, 67.

Hopefully some of you can offer me some assistance is roughly dating this watch.

    Images attached.

    Regards

    Richard

Hi Richard, a very nice Pocket Watch; some better photos would help; the background seems to be in focus but close up it is blurry. Regards Ray

Richard, your have a very fine watch.. Ekegren was a higher grade Swiss maker.. I have a similar watch the is numbered in the 15,000 range.. The patent date I believe refers to the rear time setting lever.. Most watches with lever set time have the lever on the dial side.. J.E. Caldwell was a jeweler from Philadelphia, and was the original retailer for the watch.. I would guess the watch dates to the 1880's give or take..

As others write its a fine watch and H. R. Ekegren was a top maker. As pointed out it has a rear setting lever. You open the back and pull out this lever to set the watch which should not have to be done often.

Your watch movement and case number are probably the same. The case was made for the movement, by a US contractor for Caldwell and the numbers of these usually match the movement number. Caldwell was top jeweler. The movement number is usually under the dial.

Late 1880's is a good date. Toward the very late 1880's the serial numbers went from 18,XXX to 70,XXX when Eduard Koehn bought the company.

Your watch has a porcelain enamel dial which is very big deal in today's high end wrist watches.

Ekegren was a highly respected geneva maker. He participated in teh Geneva timing trials and made some special watches for theOnservatory to test ideas on temperature compensation.

After the buyout, Ekegren remained with company and took on Eduard Koehn Junior as his apprentice.

Lovely!. I had not seen the decoration pattern on the movement. The watch is way earlier than 1958

Ive traced the inscription to a English land owner, and grandson of a UK ambassador. Looks like the landowner gave the watch to a member of staff for long service.
Still haven't found an image of a watch with these numeral colorings.
