    Are we a Family?

I wonder. A bunch of lions may be called a pride. A bunch of geese may be called a gaggle. A bunch of elephants may be called a herd. We as a bunch of Chapters are called the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. We are an organization of men and women dedicated to the theme of horology. We can be called an organization. In fact, on the computer you may type in the name (NAWCC.org) and you are immediately welcomed to our site. Type in NAWCC or use our full name and we are connected to the world of horology.

Would it surprise anyone if I said we are a family of men and women interested in horology? However, we may be thousands of miles apart. From many different stratus of life and we may converse in many tongues not familiar to one another. We may have different interests in our common bond of horology. Some are interested only in watches, others in another branch called clocks. Still others are drawn to horologic history and to the very essence of time. We have men and women who are leaders, we have many who are followers and we have writers, we have collectors of these horologic wonders in all its phases.

Ask a question about something, a clock or watch, or you may have inherited, or just bought a timepiece you may want to know more about and its age or history, or where to get it repaired. On our many Forums, men and women…people who extend the helping hand will try to answer your need.

To me, that is family. A group of humans who some how became enamored of this thing we call horology. It gave them a passion. A lease on life, it gave them a great learning experience…an experience helping them to form and to keep on adding to that qualitative experience of this hobby we call horology. Their learning experience and knowledge rubbed off on so many of our membership that has carried on through generations.

I see the NAWCC as a whole as a community. However, I do feel groups who interact with each other on a regular basis within that community could be called a family. Speaking personally, I have felt the loss of some fellow members from this message board as keenly as I have that of some kin. So yes, I considered them family I guess. This is a great topic to discuss Dan!

Thank you for your input, even many countries are spoken of "As a family of nations."

I think community is what i would use, for me family is a personal and close group. However we are all different and feel connections in a different way so we use what feels right to us as individuals be that family, group, community or friends.
What is amazing is the interaction boards like this provide for people world wide. I am a member of various boards over a number of activities that interest me. I am new here but it is very apparent that the level of decency of members to each other is very high, that is rare in an online community and special. I will speak in an online forum as i would to some-one in person and it appears that this is one forum that holds to that rule so i understand why the word family is used.
    Good topic.

Family has a genetic connection, but in the case of adoption "family" takes on a closeness of affection rather than a close genetic code. In the case of horology, I think we are a bit like adopted parents. We have adopted collections of clocks, watches or other horological items and have joined ourselves to an organization of people who have also adopted collections. That makes us connected by similarities in interests and circumstances, and we show off our "families" to others in the same circumstances, and oooh and aaah over each others pictures of our "kids". We're connected by our similarities to each other, and often become friends because of those similarities. But we're not really "family" in the strictest sense.

I would also use the term community.

One definition of family is: "all the descendants of a common ancestor". So, the term can be used to describe something other than just one's immediate family.
