I found this as a junk piece earlier today. It is quite dirty, winds but doesnt run, cracked crystal, crown doesn't pull out. I am very confused with this piece. The dial appears original but the case has me dumbfounded. It's like the outer bezel with the lugs is holding the body of the watch in it. When you go to pop off the back the entire body almost comes out of the bezel. The engraving on the back is a very nice touch. What are your guy's thoughts on this piece? J.A. By 'body' you mean the movement? Apparently there are case screws that should hold the movement in the case - maybe there's something wrong with them.

In fact I DO have a 1950s Elgin in which the movement is held in the case ONLY by a snap-on bezel (bad, bad design!!!), but this looks like a proper 3-piece case.

    Very nice Elgin, BTW!!!

It's confusing to explain. By body I meant the movement and dial is housed in a case and that case is held by the bezel to be worn as a watch.... Odd design and doesn't make sense! Still unique and I will look into having it fixed up as I have seen no other like it

Simple, but interesting, case design, average quality movement, and a really nice inscription on the back. I like it! Good luck getting it back up to snuff. Cheers.

The dedication on the case is 1931 and the Elgin Grade 434 was made in 1933, therefore this could be a re-case.
The following is an original Case and Movement of a Elgin Grade 434 ca. 1928.
