• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Asking for a friend
Did any of the Ansonia (strike/chime) wall clocks have German made movements

Thank you both for your input-- I am not an Ansonia expert and was not or am not sure.

I've repaired a couple of the new ones, kinda like apple's & oranges.

I've also seen a few Asian clocks with Ansonia on the dial, worse than apples & oranges but some actually will have a movement copied from the old Ansonia pacemaker.

Do you have a particular clock in mind? Any photos?
I'm not an "expert" but I own and have worked on a number of antique Ansonia Clocks.
The founder of the Ansonia Brass Company, A.G. Phelps, bought into clock production as a way to more profitably use the brass his company produced.
If you're looking at an antique clock with a German Movement, it's a marriage.
I don't have any experience with the "new" Ansonia Clocks but if you're looking at a modern (post 1969) Ansonia, I thnk that it's likely to have been manufactured with an imported German Movement.

The Ansonia company that we all know and love went out of business in 1929 and sold their equipment and inventory to the government of the Soviet Union. The tradename Ansonia most likely was not renewed and therefore expired sometime between 1929 and the 40 or 50 years before the "new Ansonia" started in their clock business, allowing the "new Ansonia" to use the name Ansonia.

So, when I hear "Ansonia", I refer to the original enterprise, which, AFAIK, did not use German movements.

Regards.

Exactly right, that's how I understand it, too.

So I guess with the information that "leeinv66" offered---
the answer would be yes-- if it was made after 1969.
Is that the way anyone else sees it ?

Havn't been able to get a photo yet

Technically, your statement is correct, but it is very misleading.

A more accurate statement would be:

"A company by the name of Ansonia, which was unrelated to the original Ansonia clock company, sold clocks beginning in the late 1960's with German movements. The original Ansonia clock company never manufactured clocks with German made movements."

Regards.

It could still be an antique Ansonia case which has been fitted with a more modern German movement by a previous owner.
Tell your friend that if they are still interested in learning more, we really need to see photos.
