clock front.JPG model label Detroit.JPG Hi, I would like to get a date range on this model. It has a two hammer "bim bam" movement. I did not find any date codes and am not sure if there are date codes on these movements.

    thanks, Joe

The Detroit shows up in Tran's Ansonia book (arlingtonbooks.com) from the 1923 catalogue. Perhaps it was offered a bit earlier and perhaps a bit later. The tambours were at their most popular (certainly most numerous) in the 1920's and 1930's. So far as date codes on Ansonia movements, I am unaware that they were used. We do find date codes on Ingrahams and Gilberts, but I can't think of any on Ansonias.

Steven, Thank you for looking that up for me. Is tambours the style of case or a reference to the type of gong? Joe.

Tambour is the case style. It is French for drum, and the shape of the head does resemble a drum. In some tambours, the (drum)head appears to be an entirely separate piece, set onto the base. I have seen these sometimes referred to as "true" tambours.

Colloquially they've been called "Napolean Hat" or "Camelback" Mantel Clocks...for obvious reasons. I didn't know about the French origin of the name before now though.
