• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

Annoying clockworks removal

This sounds daft, and I am somewhat embarrassed to ask, but...I have this relatively modern Hermle movement inside a large and very heavy brass case mantle clock. The problem is how to get it out: several screws detach movement from front of case, but it can't be moved forwards or backwards too far because of the dial plate attached to front of movement and the movement itself, just too wide to be pulled out through front of clock case. The dial is held in place by three pins or should be: There are only two and one of which I managed to remove. But the other, being a very short pin and very difficult to access, is a nightmare to get out. See attached pix.
Any ideas on how to tackle this?

Regards,

TonyR.

These are held in in some movements by a slotted nut on the front of the dial. Yours has such a nut. Use a slotted screwdriver and unscrew the nut. Some of these are soldered in and cannot be removed without heat. Terrible design!

Exactly where is this slotted nut? As the dial is still attached, hence my problem, I don't see where it would be... And it's not the bell stopping it from being removed. I know it's hard to see from the pictures, but the barrels jam up against the sides of the clock case and effectively stop it from being pulled out the front before the movement moves far enough forward to interfere with the bell...

I see the nut in the center of the dial where the hands were.

There is a tool made for these nuts, or you can usually get them off with a pair of keen nose pliers, or round nose pliers.

The tool looks like this and will probably need to be reground to suit the job at hand.

This nut doesn't hold the movement in place, just the dial plate. But, once the dial plate is off, you will probably see how to remove the movement mounting nuts directly, or how to remove the movement bracket (along with the movement) first and then the movement. Willie X

Some of these clocks have brazed in movements. They cannot be removed without heating the joints. I refuse to work on them because of that.

Hi,
Just wanted to thank everybody for the help with the clock; once I got that pesky screw out of the middle of the dial, my problems were solved. Mostly. But I did get the dang movement out. Thanks guys, as always.
