Does anyone have a method for repairing scratched aluminum dials? I know that they're anodized to give the required color and texture, and then they are apparently lacquered.

It's not an immediate need for me, but I always worry about aluminum dials, which show up in electric clocks and a good many mechanical clocks after maybe 1930.

Be careful and don't scratch them.

I was afraid that this might be the only valid response. I don't even know what 'anodizing' is, quite, or if it can be repaired.

    It can't be done patchily.
ie: you would have to have the whole dial redone.

But this might be worth pursuing, depending on the type of damage, etc. It's just that I've never heard of repairing anodizing, or re-anodizing, or whatever one might call it. But the anodizing process itself is not all that complex, and can be done in the shop.

    Yes, by all means.
