When A watch movement is labeled "Adjusted, 3 positions", which would typically be those three positions?

Quick question...

Supposing one of the old factories were to reopen tomorrow. Would they be able to save significantly on the time & cost of adjustments, by using modern electronic technology to take measurements?

There are a lot of things which would make adjustments less time consuming. First, machining technology including both precision and automation would make all of the balance and escapement parts more uniform and therefore less time consuming to adjust. Second, assembly techniques and automation have advanced.

All that said, I seriously doubt that even at the production scale of the 1920s things would be cheaper today, even in adjusted dollars.

This plus modern machines that automatically adjust dynamic poise plus monometalic balances with alloy balance springs all make this much more efficient.

I think the thought behind the question is that we use a time machine to send a timographer back to, say, the Elgin factory in, say, 1920. How does it change their economics?

It would speed up the adjustment phase by several orders of magnitude. What once took weeks to months could now take minutes to days. RR grade watches could be adjusted (with timographer) at almost the same speed of low-grade watches (without timographer). This would make production of better grades considerably cheaper.

Obviously not realistic at all, but a fun thought experiment. If this were actually done, the outcome would be world-altering... and probably not in a good way.
