    John,
Both of these clocks would make a great construction project. I am not aware of a source for these exact plans. However, you might give the American Clock and Watch Museum a try. When I visited the museum in Bristol, CT several years ago, they had a large selection of clock case plans for sale. Many are available on their website. If you do not find what you are looking for, you might give them a call.
    Good luck on your search,
    Allan

Thank to everyone on the feedback, I have see the Aaron Willard (Massachusetts) shelf clock new for sale but have not been able to find Dial nor plans. I know Mason And Sullivan had a kit back in the day kit K7698m... Hope some can give me some direction, find it hard to believe all these plan and history just faded away there has to be an archive somewhere ( a keeper of the past).

Also want to know if anyone remembers The American Clock Company they where located 83 & North Ave Elmhurst, IL 60126, they had a Dollhouse Collection, plans and part to build 2nd floor, Clocks and Clock Kits 1st floor, also Music Boxes, basement was the seconds... the factory was in Clintonville, WI (if I remember right), never hear about them. Think parents past and the kids sold off everything... so sad. Again another set of plans history lost
I have a Eli Terry and Tambour Clock built for my parents when I was in my 20's
Hope some can help, would love to build the Aaron Willard (Massachusetts) shelf clock with my boys but need Dial

    Thank you for your time
    John

    John,
It is difficult to tell from the photo, but it appears that the Willard dial is a common round dial and the bezel and gold-colored pattern below it may be part of the front door. If you know the diameter, you might find a suitable dial and hands at Timesavers or Ronell. Do you know any of the dimensions of the case? From that, you should be able to derive the dial size.
If the dial and other white trim are all one piece, that is a very unique dial and is probably not something that a clock supply place would have. For that you would need to go to a place like The Dial House and have one made.
Another option would be to create your own design with a computer graphics or CAD package and then print the dial yourself or have a photograph printed at the proper size. I had an 11X14 image printed at a local camera shop for about $10 and it came out great. Tried an online photo provider that was much cheaper, but the quality was poor.
This is a beautiful clock and would love to see someone build it. Keep us posted on your progress.
    Allan

The dials on clocks like the Aaron Willard are "kidney" dials. They are generally one piece although I think there are a couple of Willards that have an applied piece riveted on. The clocks in the photos attached are obviously not Willards, very much country style Mass shelf cases, but they may give you a better idea of the dial and surround and movement etc...

I don't believe you will find an "off the shelf" dial for one of these. They are generally made of sheet steel, 1/16" thick, with 3 feet riveted through the dial to mount them to the movement, like many tallcase clocks. If I were to build one of these I would start with a proper movement, then make a dial to fit the movement using photos of like clocks to scale the dial. Then send the dial blank off to one of the dial painters to have the paint done. A case could be pretty easily built from photos of similar clocks out and about, or a trip to a collector who owns one would be useful, accompanied by a scale, camera, and notepad. The clock is basically a backboard with seatboard mounting for the movement and the rest of the case is 2 boxes.....the lower case is affixed to the backboard, the upper case (hood) generally slides on and off like a period tallcase. Feet and fret can be pretty easily drawn from photos and worked via normal wood working processes..... I would approach David Lindow for an appropriate movement and I suspect he could supply a dial blank also.

I think that Woodcraft purchased Mason and Sullivan. They were selling a few kits for a little while. Perhaps it didn't do well for them because they stopped. Maybe an inquiry could bring back plans?

I bought a number of Carlyle Lynch Clocks plans years ago. I found them not to be very good in a number of respects. Others may have different opinions but I do not recommend them.

I just saw this thread, and I have a few things to add that I think will help you out...

I've made about 30 weight driven clocks over that last 11 years. All but one were of a Willard design (Banjo, Girandole, Lighthouse, large-dial regulators, and one tall clock)... No Mass shelf clocks though ! :)

Some advise: First off, if you want to be as authentic as possible, the only source for a movement at this time (and I'm pretty sure he can supply the dial also) would be David Lindow out of Pennsylvania (a Google search will show his web address). I spoke with him about a year ago. He makes "Willard authentic" Mass Shelf Clock movements. He makes them in "batches", so it may be a "hit or miss" proposition, i.e. you might have to wait a while for them to be made. Expect to pay a "good price" for them also. Your money WILL be very well spent though. He makes "a superior product" ! With a clock of this type & design you'll want it to be "heirloom quality", and with a Lindow movement, that is what you'll get ! Hold up YOUR end of the bargain, and a family heirloom is assured ! :)

I mentioned "Willard authentic" earlier. For a Mass shelf clock movement this means: 1. the movement is weight driven, 2. the pendulum is "on the back of the movement, NOT on the front like a Banjo movement". (I have seen Mass Shelf Clock repros using Banjo movements, and all I can say is "they are just NOT correct" ), And last but probably most important: 3. The pendulum has an approx. 10" drop. The standard Banjo pendulum has a 20.5" drop, so IF you used a standard Banjo movement, your Mass Shelf Clock will be too long... There are original Willard clocks of the basic Mass Shelf Clock design that have "tall base sections", but NOT with Banjo movements ! )

When I started out making clocks I bought the plans from the American Clock museum in Bristol CT for the "Aaron Willard Banjo Clock". While I mostly conform to the plans as illustrated, I have "Improvised" on them. Example: On the plans, the top of the Banjo Clock throat is too wide. I narrowed it considerably. This makes the clock MUCH better looking in my opinion. That's the ONLY deviation from the plans that I've done. (Actually, Lemuel Curtis, a Willard apprentice in the 1815 timeframe did the same thing :) ... Consider also: If there is one design of clock out there inwhich it's dimensions are pretty much "a constant", it's the Banjo Clock. It's construction just about requires you to conform to "plans" due to the "standard-ness" of it's dimesions. The Banjo Clock looks "out of whack" if it does not conform almost 100% to the proper "Willard" dimensions. To your advantage, this is Not So with the Mass Shelf Clock ! It's dimensions varied considerably yet stayed within certain "limits". In my estimation, all you have to do is get the "basic dimensions" of the clock, i.e. overall height, width of the clock head section, width of the base section, depth of the clock head section, depth of the base section, and then the height of each of these two sections. Actually, you could "look" at a picture of one and estimate the height of each section fairly well. From there, haunt a few of the websites that have pictures of the Mass Shelf Clocks by Foster Campos, Elmer Stennes, or even the antique originals. Take a look at how the clock is constructed. Except for the top decorative elements, and possibly some OG feet, the clock is nothing but "right-angled cuts" and a few sections of moldings where the clock head and base sections meet.

The first thing to do is contact David Lindow and get the movement.

Let us know how you make out !

    Joe

Joe, Just a follow up I did know about David Lindow and in talk on some movements, yes very fine quality> I also met someone who worked for Bartley Collection and know a of a person (older lady) who hand paints Clock faces, when I receive this information will share.
Question you stated that you have made many clocks ... Banjo, Girandole, Lighthouse, large-dial regulators, and one tall clock, may I ask where you bought your plans, or where can I download or purchase. I am always looking, but hard time finding this, sad because in the 70,s - late 80's these where easy to find purchase for cheap.
    Thank you for the info

    Jim,
I am just finding this thread, and wondered if you'd still have the pdfs of these plans, and be willing to send them to me? I'd be most grateful. Thanks,

Here are the plans I have, lets see if it will work in the new MB SW? Looks like that is not a good idea.

Hmmm, PM me your email address and I will send you what I have.

Hi guys, Lindow still makes movements. The 'older lady' is Martha Smallwood who has sadly passed away. However her daughter Kathie is still painting dials.

As for authentic Willard plans contact the Willard House & Mueseum Where time began in the Blackstone Valley. Some of the designs will need to be slightly modified since there is not quite enough room for the back cock on a Lindow movement. Another alternative would be to ask David to reduce the back cock length by 1/4 inch as he does for Leonard Marshark.
