The subject of pickpocketing seems to have been quite popular - possibly because it was quite common? This card from my collection - post mark looks like 1911 - is along the same lines as yours.

Another reason to have it on a good strong watch chain. Ha!

A good strong chain with a little extra theft deterrent? Ouch!

Yep! Foiling pick-pockets was the basis for these little known swivels:

Great ad! I hadn't seen that one. I think I have an ad somewhere that advertises them as one of the Keystone Club incentives. Will have to look for it later.

For now, here are a few examples of the variety of swivels offered to prevent the picking of pocket watches.

And a couple more cards - no loss of the heart in these. ;)

Do you happen to have other examples of the devices? I've often wondered if there are other styles. I try to pick them up (no pun intended and certainly not literally) whenever I find another style. Several long-time members have shared stories of scratched thighs and torn pockets, but they still had their watches at the end of the ordeal. Guess they really did work.

There is a display case of decorative dials and watches at the Museum, and I've noticed that the triangular Masonic watch has one of these attached between the chain and watch. There is no description, and I wonder if anyone else has even noticed it or realized the purpose.

Very informative article, Dave. Thank you for sharing! Have you ever seen examples of any of the other styles? I wonder if we've seen them, perhaps in a "box o' stuff" at a Mart, and didn't recognize what they were? Looking forward to learning more from those of you who are definitely more aware of such items than I. Thanks!

I do watch for them now that I know what exists. I have not seen examples of the other types.

Another theft deterrent was the non-pullout bow (pat. by Keystone, as I recall). I've seen ads and trade cards for this and will post one (unless another does the job for me).

Thanks for the reminder, Greg. Keystone was quite prolific with their non-pullout bow advertising. Here are examples from one of their trade card series. Protection from pickpockets to farming accidents to walks in the woods to unruly children.

Not sure that's a job I would want to apply for. Although it would get the point across, seems there would be a chance for injury, or at a minimum, some pockets to be replaced!

Not sure why. I'll try again...

Same result. These two scans were low res - could that be the reason? If so, I can try scanning them again at higher resolution.

Yes, 3 spikes. Looks very similar to one of yours. Does yours also have the patent date on the clasp?

From the open ring on the bottom, it looks like that one might have been yanked to test it a time or two. :)

Here is a recent purchase I made. I've always wanted one of these Anti Theft devices(seeing
Dave's and PatH's posts pushed that a little and made me keep a look out for one) I Googled NELKA nawcc - Google Search:
and it came up with my own post in this thread post #15. Well here is my new(to me) Nelka
watch guard. The spring is very fine and it does not take much
to pull out the spikes. As said above the only way safely to take a watch out of your pocket
with one of these attached is to actually pull the watch out not by the chain or
fob but touching the actual watch itself. Now, what do I do with it?.;)
.......................................and I'm going to keep an eye out for the acorn shaped one.
