I am trying to learn to work on turn-of-the-century pocket watch cases. I do not understand how , on some of the pendants, a cap stays on the pendant and underneath the crown when there are no threads on the outside for the cap and there is also no setscrew for the sleeve. It is possible that that is simply a recess to allow the crown room to be used. If that is the case then I am basically a bigger idiot than I originally thought. Thank you for your time.....

I have never come across one like you describe it.

The cases I worked on, some have a screwed on cap and some have no cap.
The caps have been mainly on US made cases and they often cover a sleve for the stem. Some sleves are screwed down but a few are just sitting there and kept in place with the cap.

It is also common to find some cork washers that I believe was for dust protection.

Can you post a picture of a case with a cap (Cap removed) that is not screwed on.

I come across these occasionally. I think it was just a design choice. It should be threaded inside for a threaded sleeve.
