This came in the mail today. Really nice looking movement. Needs serviced. The dial is in great shape also. This comes up as a grade 83 on PWDB. But it says 15 jewel and not adjusted, but this is clearly marked adjusted and 17 J.

Some of the entries in the PWDB are shaky at best. As an NAWCC member you borrow a copy of Greg Frauenhoff's booklet on Rockford watches from the NAWCC library which would be more useful than PWDB.
BTW, nice old Rockford. :thumb:

It does look alot like a grade 81 and 82, it seems the images of the grade 83 look alot different than this.

So the Rockford serial number list shows this in a run of 500 of grade 83 model 8 Hunter, but doesn't show the jewel count

I class grade 83 as 15j nickel and not marked 'adjusted' for what it's worth.

So what grade is this movement , one in the middle of a run of grade 83?

My guess is somewhere in the 82 grade but grades 80 through 82 are very confusing. I have a couple of model 8 TT mvts in the 437,xxx and 439,xxx ranges that I consider grade 80. I have been told that some later model 8 nickel mvts. are grade 81. I have nickel mvts in ranges 433,xxx and 441,xxx ranges that appear to be a grade 82a. I have up-jeweled mvts in 437,xxx and 439,xxx ranges that are g82. And, I will change any of these if convinced otherwise.

Rockfords can be a bit of a conundrum, grade and otherwise. Many of the mvts in the 400,000 to 450,000 range were finished at a time when the company was in receivership and many such were up-jeweled from 15 to 17. A then there are the interesting 21 and 22 jewel mvts from this general serial number range. But even before this time (c. 1894-1900) Rockford was a bit loose with their jeweling. Below is a much earlier grade 83 with a jeweled upper center post. I assume it's 16j but have never had it apart. There are quite a number of other Rockfords (dating before the receivership) that "should" be only 15j but that have such a jeweled center. Anyway, you have a neat watch, no matter what grade it is.
