...but ugly goes clean to the bone.”

    --Dorothy Parker

Seeing an Italian clock recently on the MB that elicited a certain reaction from me, this clock recently offered on eBay (no longer an active listing) then came to mind:

Vintage 1927 FONTANINI MANTEL CLOCK Repose Carrera Marble ROMAN Rococo French | eBay

I realize a matter of personal taste which others might not share. But to me, this thing is just hideous. Forgive me for stating an opinion.

By the way. Contrary to MB practice, there are websites where commentary about things for sale is actively sought and I suspect is helpful. One such site is the automotive related 'barn finds". Antique and "vintage" vehicles that are for sale on eBay, Craig's list, at auction or through the site itself are discussed and critiqued. Interesting observations, potentially helpful to those considering their purchase, are posted. No one seems to be panicked all of the time about being sued.

I believe our policy on not discussing things for sale is a good thing. However, I would suggest such discussions do no belong in this forum. Perhaps Members News and Views would be a better place for that. As to the clock in question, I also would struggle to live with that one on my shelf.

Empire, or Restauration? French figural clock, Paris

Although this is something I wouldn't have bought early in my clock collecting, I saw it with a cheaper "buy it now" in the UK. I bought it to expand my horizons, and to see what the fuss is all about. I kind of like it! But also, it's a "real" one.
I think you guys may secretly like those examples ;)

Years ago, we were accused of manipulating the sale prices of items up for auction by discussing them, and a lawsuit was initiated against us.
That's the main reason we don't allow discussions of active sales .... but that was many years ago and things change with time. We're pursuing a legal opinion now, and discussing the possibility of doing something like that again. Not sure where it will go.

A few years ago, I bought a lamp from an antique shop that was old, but really ugly ... much like the example mentioned above. I ended up selling it one Halloween season by calling it "Dracula and his wife" :) The buyer understood the name was in jest, but liked the idea of it for his spooky display.

I can at least appreciate the skill of the Meissen porcelain makers...even if it is ugly.

As with the above porcelain example, not my taste but I can appreciate the skills and craftspersonship that the case required even if too "fooffy".

    Interesting

Also interesting! Was not aware of that incident.

    "Dracula and his wife". LOL!

Okay, here's my recent venture into something people will probably find, well, ugly even though made with great skill by an important firm.

I really like the furniture of the Merklen Brothers. They were a late 19th century NYC firm that produced some amazing barley twist furniture. I've owned and have sold a # of their pieces. For more info, see the superfluous portion of this posting:

    Waltham Banjo Clock

In the late 1890's, towards the end of the firm's existence, they began producing inlaid furniture that was anything but tame. I recently agreed to buy (awaiting future delivery) this Merklen rocker that is one of the
ultimate examples of their inlaid furniture :

Yes, you're probably looking at these pictures and saying of course it was made at the end of the firm's existence...it was the reason for the end. Pretty wild, huh? Dig them eyes and maniacal laugh! I actually bought it in anticipation for my summer shows. If nothing else, it will hopefully grab people's attention in a sea of more staid Americana? And I don't mind having to live with it.

I'm open-minded when it comes to clocks and am reluctant to out-and-out dismiss anything as seriously unpleasant or "bad", even if it doesn't go with my flow...

But this thing ugly. It's like one of those Wendy's cheeseburgers overloaded with too many toppings, you just don't know what you're really looking at. Factory specs claim it's 93 inches tall. Might have let it slide if the chimes sounded awesome or if the movement was really good quality but this ain't the case.

Wouldn't be my first choice for an addition to the collection but beauty is in the eyes of the artist/craftsperson and the beholder.

Well, RM, I'm sure the Merklen lads were proud of their abilities with inlays and turning --maybe they created your rocker as a "tour de farce"? As Mom always said "There just ain't no accounting for taste."
