• We are aware of the performance issues with the forum. These are due to problems with Comcast's shared lines in the Columbia, PA area. On December 15, we signed a contract to bring a dedicated fiber line to the forum servers. It should take somewhere between 30 and 90 days to install. Thank you for your patience.

    Triangular Bed Lathe Questions

Hi Dushan. There are some photos of my lathe in Watchmaking, the American System of Manufacturing and Mass Production, pages 72-75. I think you might be confusing two things. The lathe (see the picture of it complete) has a set of runners as you describe in a drawer, except the pulley is...

Watchmaking, the American System of Manufacturing and Mass Production

I have put the second edition of this book on my web site at Watchmaking, the American System of Manufacturing and Mass Production and removed the first edition. At 145 pages it is double the first edition and contains many changes and additions, although my conclusions remain the same. And it...

    Triangular Bed Lathe Questions

The attached photos are of parts in a lathe I have, probably a copy of a G. Boley lathe. The lathe can be used as both turns and as a lathe with split chucks. In order, they are: Mystery chuck: I have no idea of its use. The thread is about 6.5mm and the head is about 15mm diameter with a hole...

    Waltham inventory cards

A long time ago I read the following regarding the Waltham watch company: "Around 1900 the company had ledger books prepared from what appears to be inventory cards. The whereabouts of the original cards is not known." The original NAWCC page is no longer available but the "Way Back" site has...

An Addendum to Watchmaking and the American System of Manufacturing

"Cook Rice and Potatoes" (the title will become clear when you read the article) updates some of the information about the Boston Watch Company and the American Watch Company in the years 1857 to 1858. It is based on documents in the Baker Library, Harvard University, the Suffolk County Court...

Boston and American Watch Companies, 1857 to 1858

I have written a 24-page article ("Cook Rice and Potatoes") that is an addendum to my "Watchmaking and the American System of Manufacturing". It provides some new information, particularly of the insolvency of the Boston Watch Company in 1857, and updates estimates of production. It is...

Hours, minutes, days, it must be horological!

if you search for “pussy pleasures” you wil find lots of fascinating web sites. If you search for “Watkins pussy pleasures” you will probably find Pussy Pleasures Ok, it’s not mainstream horological, but it does use “minutes” and “a while” so it must be horological!

    1850s prices

No problems. Both the English and American catalogues give the same price even though they are about 17 years apart: roughly 2 cents for balance springs and 8 cents for mainsprings. It seems prices were quite stable over this period of time.

    1850s prices

Hi Zedric, can you give me a direct link to the catalogue please? I searched archive.org and could only find the 1876 cataogue. I want to see if the 1880 catalogue has prices for mainsprings and balance springs/hairsprings.

    1850s prices

Does anyone know the prices of mainsprings and balance springs in the 1850s? I don't think I have a book in my library with the information.

I read both books ages ago, and so my opinions are far from perfect. But see my reviews in An Annotated Bibliography of Publications since 1800

    Lancashire Watch Company, England

I have written a 52-page article discussing the history of the Lancashire Watch Company, 1888-1911. The company failed because of financial problems and the article is based on financial records of the company. It is available from www.watkinsr.id.au

Seeking advice on translation software and strategies

OCR is essential. I use ABBYY FineReader to do the OCR. Then I use MS Word, set the language and spell check it. There is a very serious problem with Fractur, the old German script because ABBYY FineReader and other available OCRs cannot handle it and they produce garbage. There is...

Seeking advice on translation software and strategies

"Looks like there are 19 people seeing this thread, but none with better ideas to contribute at this stage" I have been absent. Technical translations (what you want to do) are relatively easy. There are three rules: First, know the subject. You haven't a hope in hell of translating a...

The Art of Being Drunk, Second Edition

"The Art of Being Drunk" is study of drunken fusees. Normally the fusee arbor is rotated anti-clockwise to wind the mainspring, and the arbor cannot be turned clockwise without breaking something. Drunken fusees can be wound both anti-clockwise and clockwise. I explain different designs and...
