    Cuckoo clock

This might get better responses if posted in the Repair section. It sounds like the ratchet timing is not correct, or the ratchet pawl is not lifting the rack. I presume you have not opened the case? It will need some further inspection and videos or descriptions in order to be able to...

    Bishop and Bradley movement

Moving the wheel axial seems to be a clue. I would concentrate on the 4th wheel and look from the sides. It is either in the teeth as you suspect, but might also be rubbing on the frame or somewhere else and you might be able to see something from the side. Pictures always help. Tom

    Another Dial Restoration, Another Technique...

After posting about a more recent dial restoration, https://mb.nawcc.org/threads/dial-restoration-technique.176208/, I thought I would post about another dial restoration I did a while ago. Unfortunately, I don't have any in-process pictures of this one, but I do have before and after shots and...

    Dial Restoration Technique

I thought I would post about my experience repairing a Seth Thomas Lincoln dial and explain my process. I hope it helps others with some ideas and shows that it is not too hard to achieve good results if you have patience and know some tricks. I received the dial after a previous attempt to...

Silas Hoadley Pillar and Scroll - Scroll Replacement

Yes, I see the veneer on the front face of the scroll. I guess I should have been clearer. I was asking about the exposed curved edges of these pieces - are they just exposed poplar or do they have any veneer on them? Tom

Silas Hoadley Pillar and Scroll - Scroll Replacement

Very nicely done. Is there any veneer on the top, or is that still poplar? Can you post a photo showing the front and top? Tom

Dial FAIL. Or.... pass? Your opinion. Thanks.

I am just down the road and could give it a try. Clock Repair & Restoration Dial Restoration. No guarantees, but no charge other than maybe buy some supplies. The hard part will be that the dial has color variations, so it could be an interesting challenge. PM me if interested. Tom

Elisha Hotchkiss Jr. Pillar and Splat Wooden Movement Question

The other thing I only now noticed in the first video is that the spools are on treaded screws, and even if not threaded there will be a lot more friction on a larger diameter shafts than on the pulleys with smaller wire shafts in the case. The change in the pendulum swing is probably because...

Elisha Hotchkiss Jr. Pillar and Splat Wooden Movement Question

It looks better on the right pallet, but I don't see much recoil meaning the pendulum does not get a good push. How long does it run now? Tom

Elisha Hotchkiss Jr. Pillar and Splat Wooden Movement Question

The clock may or may not run well without the pendulum on. It might be significantly out of beat even if the clock was in beat when the pendulum bob is on. That is not usually a good indicator or much. Can you post another video? Does the shim add friction? Tom

Elisha Hotchkiss Jr. Pillar and Splat Wooden Movement Question

Sorry, I have been tied up with Christmas stuff... It looks like the escape wheel is slipping off/over the front edge of the right side anchor pallet and you are not getting full power. Can you move the verge away from the face a little? Maybe shim it? The right side also looks like it's...

Elisha Hotchkiss Jr. Pillar and Splat Wooden Movement Question

Elisha Hotchkiss Jr. Pillar and Splat Wooden Movement Question

Can you post a clear video of it running? When it stops, is there any power at the escape wheel? You can tell by moving the pendulum left and right to see if the escape wheel advances. There may be power, but maybe not enough, but if there is no power then you know for certain something is...

Elisha Hotchkiss Jr. Pillar and Splat Wooden Movement Question

There is not a lot of load on the count wheel, so gluing it will probably work. In this set of photos it does look like there might be brass. They all look gummed up and the movement should probably receive a disassembly and proper cleaning and inspection. Tom

Elisha Hotchkiss Jr. Pillar and Splat Wooden Movement Question

It is probably functional as is, but as mentioned by Steven, the teeth look a little long, and they will cause extra wear on the driving pinion. In general, no it will not interfere with the time. Tom

Elisha Hotchkiss Jr. Pillar and Splat Wooden Movement Question

Yes, those are from a previous repair and not done very well. You should try to repair them properly. Here are 2 samples. They are not too hard to do with simple hand tools. I used cherry with the grain running along the radius. I started with a saw to rough cut, but did the final shaping...

Elisha Hotchkiss Jr. Pillar and Splat Wooden Movement Question

I do not see any indication this has brass bushings, but the escape wheel pivot looks very very grungy. The other pivots don't look so bad. I strongly recommend you set up some way for the weight cords to pull upward like they do when in the case. If not, then on the stand the weights will...
