This is all great information. I had no idea it might be that old. I just assumed that since he was in Germany in 1955 he probably bought it new.
I just answered my own question through the magic of Google. Plywood was introduced in 1865 and the first 4 by 8 sheets were introduced in 1928.
I wonder when oak plywood came into use?
