Remembering a Proud Deceased Veteran I have Known this Memorial Day

Richie, sadly I was almost the only one in his family who was interested in the details of my father-in-law's WWII experiences. Albert knew I considered him a hero, so he eventually opened up to me about the moral dilemma he had faced that I mentioned. As far as I know, he had never discussed it...

Remembering a Proud Deceased Veteran I have Known this Memorial Day

It was my privilege to have spent many a past Memorial Day with my father-in-law, Captain Albert Frank Magone (1921 – 2016) US Army retired. Albert enlisted in the US Army shortly after our country entered into WWII. He was selected for officer training, and while a native Pennsylvanian, Albert...

What if people were described like timepieces

Well, there was that famous Patek Philippe ad, which you have probably seen, that called their product, and I am paraphrasing, the watch that tells you not just the time, but who you are. If that claim had been literally true, it might have bankrupted the company. Half a century later, many...

Got My Covid Vaccination on Monday

I am very late to this thread. My wife and I, ages 70 and 67, respectively, lucked out and got our second Pfizer shots at a local hospital back in February. The website we found to register on had just opened and it got booked up shortly thereafter. Neither of us had any side effects with either...

What if people were described like timepieces

I was musing today on descriptions of watches or parts thereof that could be applied to people: "slightly cracked, but still functional" "has a few loose screws" "crazed" "good only for parts" "all wound up, but won't work" "ticked when shaken" "recently serviced" "needs TLC" "wobbly...

The one accomplishment of which I am the most proud - a wonderful daughter.

Annie successfully defended her thesis this AM. That makes her officially the second "Dr. Geller" in the family, as my wife Maria kept her maiden name.

The one accomplishment of which I am the most proud - a wonderful daughter.

I seem to have done at least one thing right in my life. Well, maybe two, if you count asking my wife Maria to marry me. Our daughter Anne just submitted her PhD dissertation to her committee in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology of the University of Louisville. I will show only the...

And Now for Something Completely Different

I bought the complete set of Monty Python shows a while back. This was one of my favorite skits.

And Now for Something Completely Different

An amateur hypnotist was doing a show at a local senior citizen's center. After introducing himself to the audience, he with great fanfare and buildup produced an impressive gold pocket watch from his pocket and declared, "This exquisite watch has been in my family for three generations." He...

    Watch & Clock Bulletin Articles

I serve on the Collections Committee. That committee needs to approve all accession and deaccession decisions made by the museum. I understand that it is pretty much a legal requirement to have such a committee. Or at very least, if it is not, it is certainly best practice to have such a group...

    Watch & Clock Bulletin Articles

I used to serve on the Research Committee back when Snowden Taylor ran it many years ago. I'm not sure what it does now, but at the time I served on it, it exercised no oversight over the Bulletin.

Thank you for your kind words, Jon. We had an NAWCC Publications Committee once, but I don't know whether it still exists or if does, how it actually functions. I fully agree that, especially if the editor does not happen to be a horological context expert (and in my experience, the editor never...

    Watch & Clock Bulletin Articles

I am very sorry to hear of your experiences, Jon. We can't afford to lose the talents of such knowledgeable persons as you. I have worked with three or four NAWCC BULLETIN editors and published fifteen articles and two books with them over the years and never had a major problem with any of...

The king of historical fiction is Bernard Cornwell. I've read a couple dozen of his historical novels. He writes the best battle scenes I've ever read. One of the best compliments I ever received on my own fiction writing was that my battle scenes reminded my reader of Cornwell.
