Tin of reamers and cutters found in a tool box drawer

I talked to two of my friends, one that worked in the R&D department with the fellow that owned the old Gerstner tool box originally and another that ran one of the large engravers in another department. Neither had ever seen anything like these bits at work before. It isn't unusual for we...

    American Bezel glass

FWIW those edges were made by someone using grozing pliers. They probably were trimming down a slightly oversized piece to fit.

Self Winding Clock Company- Western Union

The clock was still keeping great time when I left for work tonight so I put the cover back on it. If it keeps running until the weekend I'll plug the synchronizer back in and get some video. The fact that it's run for this long without stopping is suprising given it's mechanical condition.

Tin of reamers and cutters found in a tool box drawer

Top left corner has 3 dovetail cutters, definately milling. The ball mill next to them is a center cutting 3 flute, could be used in a mill or lathe. The majority of the rest are only reamers based on the cutting geometry of the flutes, most are around .030" OD. You might get some cutting...

Self Winding Clock Company- Western Union

That's exactly what it was doing, but I only let it get 3 minutes behind before I disconnected the sync device. I thought about speeding up the pendulum so the clock would run faster and gain a minute each hour so I'd at least get some use out of the synchronizer and get to see the light come...

Tin of reamers and cutters found in a tool box drawer

A little research tells me that nearly all watchmakers lathes have different tapers by brand and sometimes different tapers within a brand. So the only way I can make use of these bits is to make an adapter that matches their specific taper.

Tin of reamers and cutters found in a tool box drawer

I was scrounging through one of my many machinist chests yesterday looking for some small drill bits I'd seen awhile ago (still haven't found them) and ran across a metal tin full of miniature reamers and cutting tools with tapered shanks. In 50 years of machining/tool making I've never seen...

Self Winding Clock Company- Western Union

The serial number on this clock tag matches that of the works and is 68601. I found a history thread somewhere that included manufacturing dates of these clocks and they put that serial range much earlier than the 1930's. The clock does look like it's from the 30's though. I ran the clock for...

Self Winding Clock Company- Western Union

The battery and syncronizer from Kens clocks arrived yesterday and I go them installed this afternoon. I want to run the clock for a day or two to see if it'll keep time. I watched it self adjust on the hour twice and see that there must be an adjustment I have to make. Every time it self...

    Chart of clock makers trademarks?

Thanks for steering me in the right direction! It's great to have knowledgeable people to lean on but even better to learn how to research for myself.

    Chart of clock makers trademarks?

As I have become more interested in clocks in general I find identification of the makers to be particularly difficult. As evidenced by the many threads asking for help, I'm not alone. Is there a good place to find the trademarks used by the various clock makers? I ran across another one...

Self Winding Clock Company- Western Union

I spent some time with the Western Union clock today, removed the works and gave everything a good look over. The good news is the motor winding coils and the synchronizing coils are still working. The not so good news is that the front and back plates are extremely worn and will need rebushed...

Self Winding Clock Company- Western Union

Found this Western Union/SWCC clock at a local antique mall and decided to take it home. The works are extremely dirty and might need some work. The self winding motor still works but I'm not sure if the coils for the time adjust are functioning. I've been doing a lot of reading online...

Barn find wall clock -Junghans 102?

" If you want - carefully remove the paper dial and see what's underneath. The dial numerals and chapter markers were just stamped on with paint so once the metal dial is resilvered you may apply a new paint or screening transfer. " It never occurred to me that the paper dial would be glued...

Barn find wall clock -Junghans 102?

I'd love to find the proper face for this clock. The current one leaves a lot to be desired.

Barn find wall clock -Junghans 102?

The photo editing problem seems to have worked itself out. The photo above is the clock on the test stand. The paper face could very well be a replacement, in the corners where it attaches to the steel backer someone used bent over aluminum nails to keep it in place. I started working on the...

Barn find wall clock -Junghans 102?

I forgot to measure the pendulum length but the escape wheel has 26 teeth and so far it is keeping fairly good time at 102 BPM. I've been adjusting the pendulum a little at a time for a few days now. I ordered bushings and some tools from Timesavers yesterday and will work on the case until...

Barn find wall clock -Junghans 102?

Thank you very much! The Junghans' name showed up in a Google search for "HAU 233". Maybe the left over parts from HAU were being used up after the merger and the works was used without the crossed arrows to signify that it wasn't technically built by HAU and wasn't a true Junghans' product...

Barn find wall clock -Junghans 102?

I've been a machinist for nearly 50 years and am looking closely at retirement hobbies. My bucket list included learning how to fix old clocks and I mentioned it to some friends. In short order I received two wall clocks discovered in a barn that had seen better days. The first is a Kienzle and...
