I have recently been involved with inventorying a watchmaker's estate in my area and I found a number of watches branded "Ranger". In addition to quite a few of these watches, his estate included a brochure for Ranger watches, a number of cases and loose Ranger dials. It appears that he may have...
I do have a movement with a pallet with a hammer counterpoise very similar to the style used in this movement. My movement is a simple time only piece although it does have an unusual overcoil. Unfortunately the movement is not signed so I'm afraid that this doesn't help us identify the source...
John,
Thanks for all of this information. By the way, the dust cap is unmarked so that doesn't provide any additional evidence. Thanks, as always, for your help with this little mystery.
Jeff
John,
Thank you for confirming my suspicions. The escapement is indeed a Massey 3. The bottom of the balance bridge is stamped with the letter B. Could this give any information as to who the manufacturer of this movement might be?
Jeff
I recently picked up a fusee watch at our recent Regional and found that I had a bit of a mystery. With the exception of a broken minute hand and incorrect second hand, the watch is very complete and in excellent condition. When I tried to determine the age of the watch I was surprised to find...
Allan,
Thank you for your reply. To resolve the questions on my entry in your file, this watch is in a gilt (now mostly just brass) pair case with no other markings than the case makers mark that I showed in my post. The escapement is a verge escapement. Thanks for the reference on the Cedric...
Mk2,
There are some great pictures of the TAG Mikrogirder online - check out the Hodinkee article on this watch. Unfortunately the more detailed article that was posted on the Caliber 11 website years ago does not seem to be available any more. I have pictures from that article but, because of...
A little over ten years ago TAG Heuer was experimenting with some of the concepts described in this thread. They produced a number of chronographs that vibrated at extremely fast speeds (the Micrograph at 360,000 BPH, the Mikrotimer at 3,600,000 BPH and the Mikrogirder at 7,200,000 BPH). To do...
I just found this Brockbanks verge watch in an antique shop in Victoria. It is cased in an extremely worn gilt pair case stamped TG (case maker Thomas Gaunt?). It has the same 4 arm balance seen on the other watches shown on this thread and, like one posted earlier, has the balance cock engraved...
When I disassembled this movement I was quite surprised to see that this guard against damage from a broken chain was actually decorated. Like Graham, I am used to seeing a very utilitarian steel post installed to protect the escapement. That is what makes these early movements so interesting -...
Thank you to all of you who responded to my post. In answer to your questions, Graham, the fusee click is in decent condition and very functional. The fusee ratchet teeth are worn but will work OK. The set up of the mainspring will be interesting to accomplish on this watch. The square of the...
This last weekend I was lucky enough to acquire a French oignon verge watch signed Baudouin, Troyes. Baillie lists a Pierre Baudouin in Paris who died in 1785 and a Nicolas Baudoin from Paris c. 1675. Neither of these dates seem appropriate for this signature as I believe that this watch dates...
I have restored a dozen or so Pierce chronographs and have used both rubber o-ring gaskets and washers made from vinyl sheets for clutch discs.
I have made a series of punches that I use to cut discs out of the vinyl sheets that are used to protect watches from scratching. I find that the vinyl...
I've been working on a lot of Pierce chronographs lately and I just encountered one that has a number of features that I had never seen before.
First of all, the movement is marked 134 with the Pierce Pi logo.
Then it has a real ratchet wheel click instead of the usual wire click. This version...
What I enjoy so much about all of these discussions is that it forces me to go back and look through all of my watches and movements from a different perspective. I checked the Roskell 1/2 plate movement that I have to see how it compares to the one posted by John and I noticed that, not only...
I have one uncased movement with the Edward Massey Patent stamp under the balance cock. It is signed by the Boston jeweler Baldwin and Jones and has a Massey 1 escapement. The balance cock is also stamped "1703". This does not correspond to the serial number of the watch - what could this refer...
Thank you to everyone who responded to my inquiry. I don't know how I missed the previous thread on TASCO watches - lots of great information there! Another mystery solved. Thanks again.
Jeff
I picked up an interesting 16size Waltham at my neighborhood antique store. It is a private label watch triple signed for Albert S. Samuels Company, a well known jeweler from San Francisco. The movement is also engraved "Tasco United". There is much information on Albert Samuels online but I can...
Streetsnake,
There is some damage in your movement but it generally appears to be in decent condition. One column is broken off of your column wheel so that part will need to be replaced. In addition, on the dial side you are missing the floating canon pinion and the hour wheel. The floating...
