Just bought this decrepit Becker 1-weight Vienna Regulator, request some advice please...

You should always do a complete teardown of the movement, followed by a good cleaning and polishing of the pivots and bushings. Dunk-n-swish should only be done as a pre clean on a very dirty and gunky movement.

Clock feet and pillar metal finish Seth Thomas

I would use Rub n Buff metallic wax. It comes in several gold colors. I have used it to refinish metal parts for years. If you go back and polish it with a brush after application it will give you a shine that does not look like paint. I have a metal statue I used it on almost 50 years ago and...

Just bought this decrepit Becker 1-weight Vienna Regulator, request some advice please...

Peter, I would not try to take the pendulum adjuster apart. Getting the thumb knobs on each side off will prove to be very difficult and you may cause more damage than is worth the effort. I would do a pre-soak of the entire works (often called dunk-and-swish) just to get as much of the crud off...

    lever pivot polishing

For rust I use a mini sand blaster with a grit of 320 to 12000. It will clean rust dirt, grime down to bare metal. It also cleans inside lantern pinions and other tight places where nothing else can get to it. I then apply a coat of Ospho (a rust remover and inhibitor). No oil, its a magnet...

    lever pivot polishing

Agreed, the pivots don't really need polishing just a good cleaning as suggested by RC. They also should not be oiled. They should move freely and have a slight amount of side play. Unless you are doing a lot of clock wheel and arbor staking the cost of buying a clock staking tool set would...

    Broken Main Spring

I also could not find a US supplier. That is an odd size spring for a US supplier to have in stock. You might try these UK suppliers: H&W Perrin Co. (perrinwatchparts.com), M&P Clockmakers Supplies (m-p.co.uk) and Cousins (cousins.com)

    Schatz cuckoo disassembly question

I would not use a piece of wood as the bottom support. If the friction fit is still tight, driving it back on using wood as the support then you just may drive the arbor into the wood like a nail. I would recommend drilling a hole into a steel plate and use that as a support. The hole should be...

    Schatz cuckoo disassembly question

OK, in this case I don't recomend trying to remove the cam from the arbor. Willie X's method for removing it is quite valid but I don't think it will be very helpful. Trying to remove it may cause more damage. Better to leave it as is.

I don’t see mention of there being a bent shaft? Did I miss something?

    Schatz cuckoo disassembly question

For the rust I would use a rust remover of some type. Auto parts stores will have something you can use. There are numerous makes and types. Use the ruse remover and then put it through the cleaning process. Repeat as many times as necessary to get the rust out. You do not want to leave any...

    Slate/Marble/Onyx Case Component Removal/Fixing

Hide glue will become liquid long before you will damage the stone. You indicated you can see some of the glue on the miss-placed part. I would suggest you apply heat to the area where you can see the glue and see how it reacts. If it melts, it's probable hide glue and the part should come off...

    Schatz cuckoo disassembly question

This is a strike lift cam it lifts the strike release arm, then drops it to set the strike in motion. It is friction pressed in place and as you found out very difficult to get off. If you do manage to remove it you can damage the friction fit so that it will be loose when pressed back on. I...

    3D Printing Clock Tools

I don't know of any way to add anything during the printing process. The printing nozzle is only the thickness of a sheet of paper from the printing surface. If the process is stopped at any point then you have to start over again. You can design slots and holes in an object where inserts can be...

    3D Printing Clock Tools

There is a ton of 3D printable tools and other items helpful in the repair and restoration of clocks. The One shown here is of my own design to make replacement helper springs. Hide Glue

The basic rule I use in using hide glue or a permanent fix glue is: If it’s broken or cracked an should never happen I use Gorilla Wood glue. If it’s a joint or an assembly of parts then I use hide glue.

    Hide Glue

I've never had mixed hide glue last longer than 6 months what ever a publication may say. The hide glue I use does not have any chemicals in it to keep it liquified or to extend its life. I've never found the additives to keep it liquid or to extend shelf life to be of significant value. They do...

    German Key Hole Vienna, Maker?

Steven, it may be a un-marked Mauthe. It is very similar in style and construction as found in the Mauthe postings and other Mauthes I've found on line. But as you say not something to take to the bank. I will keep looking. Thanks for the reply.
