So, got this thing completely disassembled & cleaned up. I found out this is a slightly more complex clock than the average cuckoo. I had a music box, spinning dancers, bobbing birds, & the cuckoo.
When I got it, the chain for the music box to weight was broken. Somehow I knew the fact that I...
Hello, came across my first cuckoo clock at a price that was too good to pass up. It seems to be an Anton Schneider w/ a Regula 34 movt.
Only obvious issues is wood hour hand broken off & music box weight chain broken. Chain is fixable & ordered new hands.
I’m curious if there is a way to get...
Just to finalize this thread, I’ll tell you how I solved this issue. The clock o was currently having this issue was with a Lux alarm clock. My original plan was to try an alternate spring as said above.
But I had a ton of time into this already. I have been trying to figure this out for4 mos...
I have a an Ansonia clock like that I haven’t touched just because I can’t figure out what I want to do with the statue. Paint? RnB? Leave it alone?
From the research I’ve done the best at home treatment is Metal Effects oxidizing bronze paint. It has real metal in it that oxidizes of time
Not sure I understand? Yes, if you increase power with a finger the balance wheel speeds up it’s rotation back & forth, but is that related somehow to clock running to slow?
I don’t have a video, clock is back together & will be until I get a lighter spring. Movement was disassembled, cleaned, bushed, & broken spring replace. Hairspring not put in US.
The one that has me most baffled is the Lux alarm clock. Yes it’s a cheap clock. It’s loosing an hr+ a day. Tried...
Thank you. Tried both those things & there was some change , but not enough. The hairspring bounces from top to bottom on the regulator.
I feel like something is significantly off to loose an hour a day. Small adjustments are not doing it. Sounds like the spring is too powerful, I’m going to...
The movements I’m talking about are American hairspring / balance wheel clock movements. One was a Seth Thomas marine lever escapement clock movement & the other is a Lux alarm clock type movement. Both had broken springs when I got them. So, I don’t know how they ran before.
So, if I...
I’m wondering if all other factors are unchanged (pendulum length, etc…) will installing a more powerful spring in a clock make it run faster? It seems to me, the common sense answer to this is yes. By the same token, a weaker spring would make a clock run slower?
I’m asking because I’ve had 2...
I believe there are approximate standard or close to standard bpm for for most clocks. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong; but aren’t most average tall case clocks about 60 bpm; or 1 best a second?
However, I think unless you know fairly specifically it’s not very useful. I know most common...
This is a Lux movement center shaft. There are some variations on these, as the 30 hour movement changed as time went on. Yours from what it sounds like is a newer one (bent tabs) & this is is slightly older, but it should be similar enough.
The silver wheel on the center shaft (at the center...
Have that same clock & just worked on another Lux with same movement. At one point Lux switched from movements held together by brass nuts to movements held together by bending tabs, the later you have & it’s awful because the tabs often break.
Of course anything could be installed...
Get the Cuckoo Clock Calibration app if you have an iPhone. It makes putting a clock in beat a lot easier if you are not good at hearing it. I’m always off ~10% or so by ear compared the the app; which I believe is more accurate than me.
I’ve seen a few ways people use to decide if a hole needs...
It’s hard to know why it won’t run reliably, but was the clock in beat? A clock not in beat will not run reliably. Other possibilities could be something binding in the train, escapement issues, something bent not noticed, hands interfering with each other, or damaged / worn spring.
Those...
So, there is two ways to do this. Way # 1 is you are trying to learn about clocks & picked this up & would like to restore it. By all means, follow advice above & disassemble, clean, learn, get a mentor, etc…
Way #2 is you really don’t have a huge interest in learning about clocks but are...
It’s not so much BPM I like the app for, but getting the clock in beat. It tells you when the clock is in beat; so you can adjust it on the wall; the crutch; or adjust the hairspring. Maybe it’s me; but I found most of the time by ear I was only about 80% there - esp balance wheel movements ...
A puller works very well. You can get one on Amazon for pretty cheap. You could also try sliding washers over the hand & around the base; then prying up gently on each side with 2 screwdrivers.
