Picked this mvt with duplex escapement in a junk pile. Gold balance screws, diamond (?) endstone, visible plate jewels including one cap jewel. These aren't my area but looks to be better quality. Anyway, any info would be appreciated.
This account from the American Inventor (1902) pretty much describes my dial:
"The first steps in decimal time keeping taken in Switzerland have met with the approval of leading scientific bodies M Paul Ditisheim has constructed a decimal chronometer called the tropometer and a new registering...
Thanks. I doubled checked the serial number (which appears under the dial) and it does indeed appear to be 16637 (not 16627 as I noted above). FWIW, the dial and partial mvt were found together not separately. So how many of these might Ditisheim have made? All very interesting.
I was checking for online info about this decimale piece and came across this article from Scientific American Supplement, Dec. 27, 1902. It pretty much describes the mvt I have.
"NEW DECIMAL REGISTERING CHRONOGRAPH
DE SARRALTON'S SYSTEM
The problem of the extension of the decimal system to...
Ideas? Besides the holes for the usual hands there are two tiny and one larger extra ones. It is about 47 mm wide. Is this some kind of temperature measuring piece?
I'm not a collector of European watches but for some reason this little gun metal ladies watch appealed to me. Nothing special mvt but a very nice gold applied monogram.
Dr. Jon's approach is a good one but not without difficulties (as he noted). I've used it with success in identifying solid gold bows (many of which are 10k). For cases, in addition to bubbles, another practical problem are the non-gold bits such as springs.
Ethan's approach is the one I generally use, but it is worth noting that in the old days some shysters made non-gold watch cases that were intentionally flexible. I don't know what alloy was used. Or maybe they just made the lids thinner(?). Some of these fake gold cases are very very good.
It might help if you count the number of jewels. With that info and given that it is a damaskeened nickel mvt it might be possible to provide some period price and/or grade info.
