Hi Clint - just for clarification - is there a suspicion that the barrel bridge with the serial number may not belong to the P S Bartlett plate? ... Andy
Hi Clint, thanks for your thoughts on the hands and case originality. I had no reason to suspect they weren't, but I've little experience of these early pieces. I will pop the dial off to check for jeweling on the pillar plate, but will enjoy it for a couple of days before I do that. If it's 15...
I usually hang out on the European pocket watch forum, but I do have an American pocket watch interest - I try to pick up Waltham '57s whenever I find them here in the UK. While not rare, they are unusual here compared to later models. Up until today, my oldest dated to 1867. This arrived in the...
No longer in my possession, but the inscription "Presented to Mr Rippin by his friends on being removed from Ardwick to Grimbsy" suggests some form of punishment rather than the celebration of of an office move as it undoubtedly was. (Grimsby is well named!)
I think cleaning and patina go together.
I will always polish a silver case, but sympathetically. Patina is desirable and to collectors of any other form of antique silver that would rarely be up for debate (if for no other reason than that you'd reduce the value considerably by overpolishing...
Henry W Bedford were retailers in London and I've seen several watches with a similar inscription, including Walthams. I don't think this Henry was a relative of Alfred. However, Alfred did have a son Henry E Bedford who was involved in the clock and watch trade in America, and was a painter.
.. and here they are in their English double back sterling silver cases, each having been stripped down and cleaned, both keeping time to within a minute/day. Still missing a bow for one and edge/case screw for the other, but they'll turn up one day.
Hi Rodney, thanks for that. They do look similar so possibly from the same maker. What may just be coincidence is the number on both of them - yours K182, mine 2182 - I wonder if there's some significance in that 182, or is it just a 1 in 1000 chance that they both end in that 3 digit sequence ?
Adding a GW Ladd full hunter with the anchor mark, housing a Waltham '57 PS Bartlett from 1877. Missing the inner glass but this is my favourite in my small collection of Walthams - just because of the quality of the case and because you don't find many like this in the UK ! Does anyone know if...
I'm hoping someone can help me identify the maker of this coin silver case. Full hunter housing a Waltham '57 PS Bartlett from 1869/70. Only marking I can find in the case is "Warranted Coin Silver" on inside of front and rear covers. The reverse of the front cover also has a distinctive pattern...
I have a 1921 Waltham UK brochure, approx 20 double sided pages, together with the two page pocket watch price list. When you see the price of 18C gold hunting cases for top-of-the-range movements, it's hardly surprising they're not seen that often !
Here's the other '57 AT&Co UK cased. Was also a non-runner and fully wound, but has now wound down under it's own steam and being prepared for a complete strip down and service. S/N 765410, produced latter half of 1874, in a Dennison "AB" case, hallmarked Chester 1877. They could have feasibly...
Hi Keith, fancy us meeting up on the American forum rather than the European ;)
Thanks for your thoughts. I'd love it to be a factory mod for an export order, obviously. Have taken another look at the hinge block and fitting it has involved cutting out a slot in the raised edge of the pillar...
My main interest is English pocket watches but I have a small side collection of pre-1900 Walthams. For a while now a hole in that collection has been a model '57 Appleton Tracy grade - they simply don't turn up very often in the UK, and never at a price I can justify - I collect on a budget ...
topspin - I have an 1877 "Airedale" s/n 2641035. No picture I'm afraid. In an 1885 "AB" case which I think is original.
I've never thought of Airedale as a grade, rather as a private label. Given the proximity to Fattorini's premises, I speculate that Airedale was the plate label used for...
I spend most of my time on the European forum, given that my main interest is English lever and verge pocket watches, but I do have a small side collection of pre-1900 Walthams. I picked this one up late last year in a mixed lot of otherwise unremarkable model 1883s. Just got round to cleaning...
