Suddenly I have two QQ clocks both gifted to me. I've got them going surprisingly well but 22.5 hours duration isn't enough! I keep forgetting and I have no latitude. The weight is on the floor AGAIN!
Does that trick really solve this silly problem of needing to live in a castle to get the...
Hi RL - Yes that's entirely sensible. Even in my garbled original text I was sure this is a modified watch movement with a really big mainspring. {Proper factory job). It seemed to be unwinding so slowly but I was simply mistaken. Graham Morse sorted me out with it. One last snag is that the...
Yes thanks Graham. I see that. Although I could yet make a key with wings to help the winding, if this test goes as I expect I might just quit while ahead. The time keeping looked good up to the last. say, six hours when it slows down. If fully wound - yes I think a week is possible. Thanks...
Hello Graham & Les
As promised I have at least one presentable photo. These complement my previous photos.
The clock is running fairly well and making more sense. Full winding is not really advisable with the existing key as the hardened square is worn and its too easy to disengage it. However...
Wow good thinking Batman! Of course and its more of a luxury type item back then I would say. The owner, who I don't know well, did mention in passing a knowledge of other older cars. (Did she say older Morgan?), and the reset lever hanging below the dash for the odometer reset is not unlike...
Hello Graham.
I think that is absolutely correct. In due course I may take it out and get some more pictures to post here. I often do take photos if the assembly looks complex but this isn't. Just two bridges and the balance. What with this curfew, containment, quarantine, and isolation, I may...
I can't find an existing category for this instrument. I will describe it as best I am able. The movement is no longer part of the (alleged) Hillman car it came from. It was put into a small brass case of copper & brass made by the owners father, probably in the 1950's or 60's. The main train...
Like cats - they have servants - yeah? "I'm here look at me. Attention time! Aren't I pretty? Wind me up; Let me down; I'm asleep; Clean me up; sooth my beating heart; Mee-ow! - Cuckoo! - Bo-o-ingggg! Dong! Admire me; No I won't; I'm busy- do not disturb!"
Oh dear I think I might be mad. Yet only slightly compared with some of you! Wassermarrer wiv U? Are you short of time? If you don't keep winding - time will stand still for you. It's always been going on a little bit with me but 18 months ago I happened on a 400 day on Ebay. It looked good and...
Just a quick thanks for this older post. Got my aunt's (RIP) slate/ French Marble clock. Needs the treatment! I have always called it "slate" but I see from what is written here abouts - it is French Marble. I have got it going. Strike arrest NOT! - Bongs until spring runs down strike train...
Gotcha & thanks Bangster. I was very meticulous about setting the beat - so surely that will be the reason why it won't self start. Always something else to know and it won't be wasted on me; I'm receiving!

Thanks for the tip Willie. Just one Smiths here now. I don't think it always does self start. Any ideas why? I mean you can't expect to pick it up can you? That stops it. Keeps spot on time. Runs the full 8 days.
DU = Dial Up - Sorry! :<))

We should thank Darrahg for his thorough coverage of this subject in that pdf link. The photos therein are particularly fine. All you should need is there. Bonus is the platform coverage and the other links/pdf's. Thanks a lot.
Quite an interesting alternative to the standard balance. They seem...
Gosh that's that highly volatile stuff like Schnapps isn't it? I would have thought it would be likely to freeze and possibly crack the jewels or the cement that holds them in place? A little thinners in a warm environment maybe all you need just to soften & remove any muck that shouldn't be...
Thank you both for that response. Interesting stuff which makes a lot of sense.
I've only dealt with 2 or 3 of these Hermle floating balance clocks. All Smiths (English Clocks) and I was helped via this forum. I recall one was principally out of beat and a little seized. Another was just tight...
That's correct and what a legacy to those old craftsmen these lovely old items are. Would it be that something I have done would survive so long! I wonder should I carve my name somewhere? My best hopes are now pinned on cyberspace. I want people to come here in 100 years and say "Oh look that...
Hello Chimeclockfan. Thanks for your response.
Wow ten years of your life preserved "forever" in cyberspace!! The world has moved on and not always for the best. Those old masterpieces are unlikely to be repeated. When people had time for time and struggled to obtain accuracy without having...
