Yes for sure some kind of pin is missing. I put alternate pins in and that seems to have done the trick for now. Although there is a bit of back and forth play that I don t see in the 3rd arbour. Is that OK?
I am working on a westminster chime clock for a friend and I have encountered an issue I haven't seen before. The arbour for 2 of the mainsprings has separated into 2 parts. When I put them back together the winding shaft just spins. There must be something I need to do to get the 2 pieces to...
Now that is interesting. The plates did appear to be very straight. I wonder if that is exactly what happened? I didn't want to start bending them my self so used the washers Instead as a kind of test. It is absolutely possible that someone added bushings and straightened the plates and then...
Yes that makes sense. It does appear that some bushing work has been done as I see very little wear in them. I didn't install any. Chamfering the inside of those bushings may be the final bit of work to be done but for now I will leave it running with the spacers between the plates and see if...
Interesting development...I removed the movement from the case and started by examining the end shake on the going train. On the second wheel there was none! Bushings were good but very little end shake in general. Robbing power for sure. I took the movement apart and examined the second wheel...
Great history. Thanks for this. I have another French clock (very heavy) with a presentation plaque to a departing minister from the senior Bible class in 1911. I am a suckered for these.
Hi Joe, the plaque on the Walnut clock reads "Presented to P C Herbert Welham as a mark of esteem by the officers and men of East Dulwhich Sub. Div. Metro Police on his retirement on pension June 22nd 1913. AFTER 25 YEARS". I have no connection to it but I just love the history!
I also noticed that. There has always been some play there. It is almost like it shakes a bit each time it moves Back and forth. Not sure why that is. Haven't seen that before.
Hope those short videos are helpful. Same issue as I returned the clock to its normal position. It is now out of beat and will not run. With time and tiny adjustments I will get it going again but this happens any time the clock is moved or even wound. This is what points to an obvious problem...
This is really helpful. I did a complete disassembly and cleaning. Polished all pivots and checked bushings. I did not replace any but maybe I need to do back and have another look. While I am in there I will check the other things you have mentioned. It runs well between windings but it is just...
Thanks Willie.I have done the full cleaning as you describe but I didn't stretch out and service the spring. Maybe that will help? I have worked on many Ansonia clocks but never run I to this issue.
So the clock continues to run but will not if it is even the very slightest bit out of beat. This happens with each wind. The pendulum amplitude seems very small. Would a new mainspring give it more power, increase the pendulum amplitude and solve these issues? Would love opinions on this. Thanks.
Thanks so much for this. It is very helpful. I will have a look at the click wheel but I was wondering if the escape wheel was not contacting the pallets properly and thereby reducing the pendulum amplitude. I have installed jeweled pallets before so I understand how they work. These pallets...
I have an Ansonia "Boston Extra" Cast iron Mantel Clock that stops as I wind it. It has been cleaned and serviced by me and this seems to be the only issue I am having with it. I have had many Ansonia mantle clocks and I have not encountered this issue before. It has an open escapement so I can...
