Here is a twist that happened to me just a few weeks ago. I went to a local antique show and ran across a seller who is a well known professional local coin dealer and scrap gold/silver buyer. As with many professional coin dealers they had a few antique pocket watches offered for sale.
In...
I am no expert on Illinois and request some info on this one.
Currently on my bench I have a 16s 21j Illinois "Capital" ser # 3980361. This pendant set movement is adjusted to only 3 positions, however, the train is gold w/steel excape wheel, screws are gilded and it sports a factory...
A friend of mine (who also enjoys repairing watches) mentioned that starting in the late 40's or early 50's acrylic crystals were standard on 992B's whether or not the instrument placed in railroad service and that the glass crystal that I installed in my model 15 case should really be acrylic...
My week is up and this time my 992B faired far better. In the week that it's been carried the watch shows a gain of about 9sec as of 9pm PST Naval time, 171hrs of constant runtime.
I failed to check my times on Sunday, seven days from my start date. As of today my two 12s entries timed in as follows.
South Bend 415 is behind 28sec, or neg 3.11sec a day.
Hampden 302 gained 2min 10sec, or pos 14.44sec a day.
These were left static in the DU position.
I'm in on this one as well. I am entering the 992B I ran during a previous challenge that showed a gain of about 1 minute that week, which was right after I serviced it. I've since made some adjustments so I think it should perform with greater accuracy. Time will tell
Ser # C460702...
I'm in. I've two that I will run for a week.
Both have been stagnant for a few years - just wound them up & they seem OK.
First is a South Bend 415 ser # 189819
Second will be a lowly Hampden 302 ser # 3767694
A Sunday or Monday start is fine w/me.
My 992B is still chugging along breautifully but in my zeal to get it up & running in time to enter into this latest challenge it did not have any chance to settle down post service. At it's current rate of gain I expect it to be a minute fast -give or take a few seconds - by the time the week...
Mahlon sounds like the real deal - a true old school master watchmaker. How many of those are truly left?
Dan, you are one lucky guy to be his acquaintance. Absorb what you can from him.
To expand on Dr. Jon's reply:
There are two sets of meantime screws. One pair is located at the each balance arm end and the other pair midway between the balance arms, one on each side.
To put this thread back on track - for this challenge I will be entering (like Ben) my most recently acquired watch - 992B #C460702, Model 15 case, that I literally just finished breaking down, re-staffing and servicing. The watch will be carried for this challenge.
I haven't yet made any...
Nice early Elgin. I'm no expert but believe that the factory marking on the dial should read "National Watch Co" not "Elgin Nat'l Watch Co" on a serial number that early - but a very cool dial just the same.
I did not get the chance to check the time today until 6pm PST.
Here is how my two entries performed from noon 9-6 until 6pm today, 10-6-11:
18s Circa 1871 National Watch grade 57 slow train KW/KS #136909 gained a total of 2min 15sec for the month long run. This equates to an average daily...
Checking in with my two entries compared against my computer clock...
The 11j National keywinder has gained 1min 25sec since the Sept 6th start. Pretty respectable for an unadjusted 1870's vintage watch IMHO.
The 17J has gained 2.5 minutes since the start. I think some minor adjustments are...
Thought I'd check in.
The National keywind 11j (the one I'm carrying this week) is gaining an average of 4sec a day.
The bench rested 17j is fairing a little worse, gaining an average of 6sec a day.
I'm going off my computer clock for comparison and I didn't start running them until the...
