I have a customer who showed me an Elgin Father Time with 23 jewels. I looked it over and it looks correct to me. He said he had a watchmaker take it apart enough to see that the numbers on the underside of each plate matched. I can find no record of such a watch being produced. Is this possibly...
I bought a 2000 stainless submariner date today that has a Rolex crown engraved in the outer back with a person's name above it and the words-Rolex Crown Club below. Could someone tell me what that means? Should I leave it there or remove it? Thanks
I bought this fusee chronometer today on it's way to the scrapper. I was approached by the owner to sell him a key so he could see if it ran befoe he scrapped it's 18kt. case. I grabbed it out of his hand, told him that I'd buy it and made the deal. Well, it does run and keeps accurate time, but...
Thanks for your insight Steven. I could only think that by marking the movement with the case makers trade mark, it would cause the two to be sold together. As you know, movements and cases were sold seperately during these times.
I got an American Watch Co 18 size watch today that is marked in a way that I've never seen. It's in a Crescent watch case co. gold filled case that's marked patent applied for 22.79. This is before the crescent watch case co. was formed according to my Schugart book.
The really strange thing...
I acquired a Hamilton 992 today that is marked engineer corps usa with the number 395 above the seconds bit. I have found several posts about these watches on this website but I can't find the article called"Railroaders' Corner - Over There, The 992 in the Great War," NAWCC Bulletin No. 326...
I recently acquired a Longines one button chronograph that dates to around 1929(4.5 million serial number on movement in a 14kt. green gold hinged double back factory case. I am unable to find a picture of this exact movement but it looks very similar to a version of the caliber 13.33z. Can...
Thanks Larry-I will be more careful from now on when using these terms. I'm sure glad this Howard watch I just got has a jeweled barrel instead of the later jeweled banking pins. This is a nice watch but $90.00 for a gold filled 23 jewel railroad approved watch had to be crazy money in 1909. I...
I always heard the motor or safety barrel terms used interchangeably.
I got this info from the web
:Motor or safety barrel
Around 1900, when broken watchsprings were more of a problem, some pocketwatches used a variation of the going barrel called the motor barrel or safety barrel. Mainsprings...
