    Fleet triple-chimer is possessed.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it's running with the pendulum attached: it's a very short one. I ended up taking the movement apart again. No bent arbors or pivots, but one of the pivots at T2 was ugly, and needs a bushing. Could a rough pivot at T2 cause these symptoms? The other end of the...

    Fleet triple-chimer is possessed.

I have a Fleet triple chime mantel clock that has been giving me fits. It was made in Canada around mid-century, apparently on a Friday during the dark of the moon. When I first got it I gave it a good service and it ran fine for a couple months, but since then it has taken to stopping...

    Seth Thomas scape wheel problems

Yes, begins to look like a new wheel is needed. Turns out, after a couple hours running on the bench it began behaving erratically again. With multiple short teeth present, it's possible that someone may have already tried to top this wheel. Unfortunately the anchor is a solid piece, so no...

    Seth Thomas scape wheel problems

Update: I put the escape wheel in the lathe and turned it by hand against a reference, and indeed two of the teeth were a bit lower. Using the technique from LaBounty's article on massaging escape wheels, I was able to draw the two offending teeth out far enough to get things ticking properly...

    Seth Thomas scape wheel problems

I have a Seth Thomas time-only movement on the bench that was mounted in a Ships clock case. (see picture) The movement showed evidence of less-than professional repairs. I cleaned it and polished the pivots, then rebushed it as needed. There seemed to be lots of power; however, when I got it...

Help Should I open this old Chelsea...or not?

I probably should have mentioned that I'm a working clockmaker with a pretty complete shop. I can certainly manage the COA, but I'd hate to mess with the platform unless it has obvious problems...which it doesn't seem to. I think I'll take Shutterbug and Dave's advice on this one for now, see...

Help Should I open this old Chelsea...or not?

I recently inherited a very nice US Gvt Chelsea 9" dial, white face, time only clock, Bakelite case. I'm guessing vintage mid-century. It's pristine; looks like new, might even be new...ish. I doubt that it's had many hours of running, and doubt even more that it's ever been opened. My...

    Odd striking problem

Sure enough, moving the snail one tooth lined up the rack tail properly. All seems well again. Interestingly, the strike seems to rely on the chime train to trigger its function. Removing the weight for the chime train stops both the chime and strike.

    Odd striking problem

Thanks to all. It was puzzling to me that it would work fine for a while, then develop this problem. Moreover, I thought that if the snail was improperly adjusted, that the symptom would manifest when it struck the other hours, rather than just at 12. That said, after reading the posts, it's...

    Odd striking problem

Thank you, that makes sense. I will (sigh) take the movement out, remove the face and have a go. Spidicus

    Odd striking problem

I recently acquired an E Lauffer grandfather clock. It wasn't running at the time, but the only problem seemed to be a broken clickspring on the first wheel of the going train. I made a new one, split the plates, installed it, cleaned everything up, and hooray! It worked! It chimed...
