Here is a monster cuckoo I'm currently working on... 4 foot example.
It's unusual as all the animals are alive, nothing is dead. Carving is exquisite (see pics). This one also has a six tune music box. Needs some caring restoration and an overhaul.
Ill update it here when finished.
Or focus on the high quality antique pieces. Many of the antique cuckoo clocks are high quality, beautiful, and continue to outpace most other clocks in value appreciation. I know several collectors who focus on buying and selling these clocks and do very well.
Hi Richard,
While many wouldn't consider it to be a "traditional" Black Forest clock, it appears they were made/offered by traditional BF makers.
Here is a selection of very similar clocks (heavily carved with enamel cartouches) from a Gordian Hettich Sohn Catalog in my archives, C. 1900...
Robert,
Your clock is a Beha.
It was offered by the firm as a model number 512 into the early 20th century.
I am attaching a scan of your model from the Beha & Söhne catalog c. 1890. At that time the clock has a factory price of 53 marks with the 8-day fusee movement.
Current values on...
Burkhard-
Its a very nice cuckoo... I wouldn't call it simple. :-)
If you have the clock still in your possession, please take a close look across the top of the roof. I am guessing you will see some small holes, to the left and right of the "chimney". Can you post some close up photos looking...
Nice Beha cuckoo. I will look through my literature tomorrow and see if I can find a case match... Or something close.
There seems to be some confusion... The label on the backboard advertises Beha cuckoos with an echo complication, these lables were used on a wide variety of clocks with and...
Hi Jurgen,
I have a large group of catalogs out getting scanned (in preparation to have high quality facsimiles made), but was able to find this in a GHS catalog from 1900 that is still here.
I will let you know the other firms in the next week, but I think it is also in a Romach & Hass...
Hi Jurgen,
Thanks for the post. The huge cuckoo clock is a monster. There is a twin here in a private US collection.
This was a popular model in the early 20th century... as it is found in 4 different firms catalogs I have in my archives.
Here is an image from the catalog of the Triberg...
Here are two images that show Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John with their accompanied symbols... The cherub, Lion, Ox, and Eagle. Depictions of these symbols to represent the Evangelists go back to 400 A.D.
The first image is a fresco on the ceiling of a church in Florence Italy. The second is...
Jurgen I have... nothing similar is found in Jüttemann, Schaaf, Bender, etc. My correspondence last week with Schaaf and others has led me to believe this is most likely a unique piece... although you never know.
Well done Les!
Taking your information... I spent several hours last night doing some research and this is what I have been able to confirm.
No question the scene shows Christ with the "Four Evangelists", which are Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John.
The symbols at their feet are key in this...
I recently acquired a clock that I feel is telling a story, beyond what initially meets the eye. I thought maybe some on this forum could give their opinions and insights...
There are 5 figures that strike bells. This clock is a popular BF clock known as a Glockenschläger, however this one...
I found this interesting cuckoo clock, and wondered if anyone has seen another.
An alarm complication paired with a cuckoo would have been pretty unpractical... for obvious reasons.
The cuckoo calls the full and half hours with the strike to the gong, the alarm is sounded by the bell...
Re: How are your clocks displayed throught the home?
Here are a few photos from my clock room/office... really turned into the overflow on the clocks that cant be displayed throughout the house.
Re: How are your clocks displayed throught the home?
Clockmogul: I am happy to take a video of the coin-op Wehrle for you. I am out of town, but will do it when I get back later in the week... I think a nice High quality Beha cuckoo would really compliment your collection.Richard: Thanks for...
Re: How are your clocks displayed throught the home?
Here is a group of musical Black Forest clocks made by Emilian Wehrle displayed against one wall.
A short description of the clocks in the photo is as follows Left to Right:
On the wall: An 8-day Wehrle flute clock, 8 pipe, two tune...
Definitely not a dumpling eater... its something more complex.
The Knödelfresser just has a single wheel on the back plate of the movement that drives the automata.
This one has three arms that control a more complex automata sequence.
The shaft that extends off the back plate of the...
