Brought this clock for £10 yesterday, it was in an awful state. The dial was brown the plates pitted with corrosion and the whole movement dripping in wd40. I have stripped an gently cleaned all the parts and reassembled with the smallest amount of oil on the pivots. It has been working all day...
Well I had the movement out and it appeared to be a jammed rack. It strikes the hours perfectly now. However, - we still have a (new) problem.
It now sometimes won't chime or strike at all on the hour and on the quarter it peals then chimes once. All in all a bit confusing.
Apart from this...
Hi there, my Smiths mantel clock has a lever to silence the chimes, - it didn't work (or rather it was intermitant in operation.) I have removed the movement and discovered that it didn't quite lift anoter lever far enough to stop the strike and chime trains. I put the smallest od bends in the...
Thanks for the replies, I think it may be a Junghans, - I've seen some similar photos on the web.
The movement will only run if I apply so slight pressure to one of the gears near the escapement wheel. If left alone the wheel won't turn back and forth very freely?
I have serviced clock...
The watch shown below was brought at a car boot sale for 50p. It has no cover over the back of the movement and only runs for a minute or two. ( I think it may have been overwound.)
Is it beyond economic repair? And any ideas on manufacturer and date. I can't see any clues.
Thanks, Kevin.
Thank you for your reply Roland, - very informative. Can I wear this watch as it looks smaller than most of my modern quartz (shudder) watches! Perhaps it was the norm in the 50's and 60's and watches are just made too big today!
This watch has Sekonda on the face and is marked 21 jewels, made in the U.S.S.R. In between the lug is stamped Au20M. Is it a gentlemans or ladies watch? (modern watches are so very big nowadays). And any ideas on the date?
The other watch is a cheap modern watch for size comparison!
Thanks Richard and Laprade. I am probably going to sell it on eBay. Any idea what sort of money it would realistically go for? It just doesn't go with our house or furniture!
I have a green onyx/marble clock, it is a timepiece only. The key says Popular Progress. I can post move photos later. I'm guessing the movement may be English about 1900, however the number under the clock 1379 appears to be in classic early Victorian style. Very confusing!
Also I forgot to...
