Thanks for all the interest. Sorry I took so long to write in again. Happily we had a busy season for clocks!
Thanks also Leprade for the pics. Yes, I found similar clocks from my google search
The one thing that still doesn't fit with the "ball feet" theory is that there just isn't enough...
:)
China is a big place right? :) They have good and bad stuff like anywhere else.
This one was especially cheap - even for China. Though the Germans make this movement pretty inexpensively as well, but not for as little as what you paid.
I also appreciate the fact that these...
Not everything made in China is anathema. Although, in this case I will say that a clock nut can tell the difference between one of these and a German one. The German one is more finely finished, more refined
Those Hermle-style movements are nice. Is yours a 14 day?
Is the movement stamped with Hermle's name? I know that Chinese and Indian companies copied the design.
Our Sternreiter model has that movement (made by Hermle) with the pendulum in the front and it is 14 day...
Hmm, sort of - except that that case looks to be square from the rear view... like the rear door is the whole square area, rather than the clock being a separate entity in it's cylinder case... also front wind.
I was looking at the clock carefully again and had a thought. These hinges on the...
Just to clarify another point...
I think this statement is misleading. The phrase "made up" is used so fast and easy and usually refers to either marriages that alter the integrity of one or the other pieces - or it's used to describe wild matchups (for example an old movement in a new...
I'm pretty sure that "Zaandam " and "Zaanse" are different words for the same stle... "from the Zaan region"
This style was made consistently since the 17th C., so definitely possible to have one from the 20's.
Yours should be an 8-day.

Good ideas, but it's definitely not stain. It's filthy with dirt - caked on all around. Also, on the places where the inlay is missing, it's been missing a long time - dark brown and worn in with plenty of oxidation.
That may be something that's not transferring in the pics, but believe me...
Thanks for your comments. I just want to point out for clarity that the picture you attached is a photoshop mockup (for the purposes of demonstration) and isn't a picture of an actual clock - right?
I'm just not sold on the idea of bun feet mounted directly to the brass housing. The holes...
Probably made 1970's or 1980's. Somebody here can probably look up dates for that name. The movement was possibly made FOR Haid by Hermle or SBS.
Here's history on the style of clock (Zaandam or Zaanse):
Shortly after Christiaan Huygens invented the pendulum escapement (1656), this style...
Here's some more pics of the stand:

I look forward to seeing the picture. As yet, I can't imagine any other kind of stand for the clock than what I have. I have a hard time picturing ball feet attached to the three holes in the bottom of the head that would support the clock. Even if the third (middle hole) were added later for...
Wait, why am I supposed to separate the two? What would I do with the clock with nothing to mount it to? That's silly.
The sedan clocks I've seen pictures of have the movement that fits inside a case. This wouldn't be possible in this case because of serrated edges on the back door. It...
I just got it!
It is nice. Ticking away happily!
So, there are three holes on the underside of the "head" the center one has a rod that looks like it goes through the whole solid-wood "stand" with a nut on the bottom of the stand and a well worn nut that you see in the picture. The...
Thanks Leprade. I did a little reading and found this thread:
https://mb.nawcc.org/showthread.php?t=41510&highlight=portable+clock+verge
...where they talk about "portable" or "sedan" clocks. Is that what you are referring to? Is there a difference between what is referred to as...
Any comment on why the movement looks like a watch movement? Was it common for watchmakers to make rear-wind versions of their movements for clocks like this? And why the squared round plates? Why not use the same round plates that they made for the watches? Or, am I wrong? Is this movement...
Thanks for all the great feedback.
Yes Leprade, it does look like my Austrian clock (http://www.flickr.com/photos/9348229@N04/3559196931/) which is kinda why I got it. That's what I meant when I said it sort of looked continental - but the big finial and inlay are definitely English.
I...
