    Dave ...I successfully removed the flywheel and shaft and de-gunked all the solidified lubricant, polished the shaft, lubricated and reassembled the unit. AND VOILA' !!! Success! I am sure glad I tried. It gave me quite a sense of accomplishment...AND an EZ fix I must say!! Thanks for the advice...
