• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

The "Dollar" watch, show me some of yours.

I was able to remove the dial from the Ingraham "Victor" . It was affixed with 4 bendable metal tabs like those on the cheap toys that I used to destroy during my boyhood. There are no markings identifying the dial as an Ingraham product but presumably you or others here are able to recognize...

The "Dollar" watch, show me some of yours.

So I decided that I should pull the dial for a look-see in order to determine its maker. First step being removing the stem. I couldn't even do that. I unscrewed the relevant screw to the left of the stem which should have released it however the stem will not come out. Absent some trick of...

The "Dollar" watch, show me some of yours.

Interesting piece. Was this a regular production model or was it a private label/promotional item?

The "Dollar" watch, show me some of yours.

Thanks Jim. The date (on the movement) says 9-14. The 4th wheel pinion looks intact, the seconds hand having gone AWOL. I figured that setting was accomplished by pressing the crown down as per usual dollar watch practice however the watch winds rather than sets with the crown pushed down.

The "Dollar" watch, show me some of yours.

I didn't know that Ingraham made a "Victor" model but here it is. I knew they had a "Victory" model but not a "Victor". Perhaps a private label? Anyways the thing winds & runs but I can't set it regardless of whether I press down on the crown or pull it up. Having no experience working on...

    Sleeve adjustment problems

Yes, the sort used for working on decorative chains & beading projects. In my case I picked up a set of 4 (3 pliers, 1 cutter) from "Michaels" which work fine for light duty tasks including playing with watches.

    Sleeve adjustment problems

I was taught to remove stems from the inboard side of the pendant & to re-intall them from the inboard side as well. Having said that I've found that sometimes it's less stressful seemingly to re-install the stem from the outboard side. In any event removing/installing stems puts maximal...

    Sleeve adjustment problems

Those sleeve fingers or prongs are composed of spring steel & like all springs they work harden over time, become brittle & snap. Your sleeve looks like there's corrosion on the fingers, rust is a well known stress riser & it's virually guaranteed to cause a spring to fail over time...

    Sleeve adjustment problems

Yes I would have suggested that one of the "fingers" on the sleeve had snapped off or gotten bent ...

    Hydepark Pocket watch.

I fairly often find on new acquisitions that the screw retaining the crown wheel (the smaller winding gear) is loose thereby allowing that wheel to lift up slightly while winding causing it to miss the corresponding teeth on the ratchet wheel (the larger winding gear). I'd double-check that the...

Please Show the Most Recent Addition to Your Collection

ELGIN DE LUXE Picked this up today at one of the few remaining antique shops in our neck of the woods. This 10-size 17-jewel Model 5 Grade 542 Elgin is in its factory-supplied 10K yellow gold filled case. This 80-year-old watch likely spent most of its life sitting in a drawer. It functions...

    12 Illinois, "ROCKLAND"

Thanks Rob. I find that I cannot open my own spreadsheet as posted above so I converted same into PDF format & attach that for those in the same boat:

    12 Illinois, "ROCKLAND"

And that list hasn't been updated recently, there are some more examples that I see every so often but I haven't included due to a loss of steam. I'd also note that I recorded just a single example of each name so there may be worded named models with differing model/grade numbers.

    12 Illinois, "ROCKLAND"

For a while I was keeping a spreadsheet of various 12s Illinois worded named pocket watches, here it is for anyone interested:

    12 Illinois, "ROCKLAND"

In the 1920s Illinois assigned literally dozens of worded model names to its 12s & often to its 16s pocket watches. Some of these were private labels others being regular factory offerings. These worded model names were above & beyond the usual numerical model designations & grade numbers...

What are YOU wearing today? Please share!

Looks like Lip licensed their R25 calibre movement which then became the Prim calibrer 50. Am I correct in that?

    1915 Elgin 3/0s movement--too early for a wristwatch?

And don't forget the influence of Rudolph Valentino, the silver screen star adored by the ladies in the 1920s. That male idol wore wristies thus any man hoping to make a favorable impression with the apple of his eye just had to sport a wristie! I think that Valentino was known for a famous...

A Few Canadian Railroad Watches - Please Add Yours

Further to my previous post herewith reproduced, these Zenith Extra R.R.56 watches were supposedly made in a total quantity of 1000. Five hundred came with the "Boxcar" Canadian dial, illustrated above. The other 500 were outfitted with a "Montgomery" Canadian dial. So I just had to have one...

    1915 Elgin 3/0s movement--too early for a wristwatch?

Usually if the lugs were soldered onto a pocket watch case in order to create a wristwatch case therefrom, the lugs used would be of the "fixed" variety whereas your lugs use spring bars. So I'd agree with you that the case was likely made for wristies from the get go. I can't tell from the...
