• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Filling in the numerals on a gold dial

Does anyone know exactly what instrument is used to write the numbers on a porcelain dial (and probably the same for a gold dial)? Where to locate such instruments? Was it some type of quill with a very very VERY fine nib?

Filling in the numerals on a gold dial

Thanks, Ethan. I think if I had the proper tools and correct ink substitute, I could replicate.

Filling in the numerals on a gold dial

Just a follow up to my question, I suppose the application of the numbers is similar to the dial making of a porcelain dial of the same period. The roman numerals are painted on. So what exactly is the technique of that? What type of instrument was used to draw the lines so straight and so...

Filling in the numerals on a gold dial

Hi everyone, I have an old repeater circa 1850s with gold foil 20k dial. The numerals lost their black fill years ago. It's been a long time since I looked at it and I happened to locate it and so I needed to edit my original post. I originally thought the dial was engraved to hold wax for...

    Some Thoughts on Collecting

Speaking of museums, isn't it true that a donation to a museum can later by sold by that museum if it wishes to thin out the collection? To me, best way to do it is find someone or multiple who will appreciate, encourage to collect and leave to them and hopefully that continues on.

    Waltham 88's show them off

Ethan, maybe it is a camera angle making it that way. Let us know when you look!

    Waltham 88's show them off

That one yes but I have seen others over the years when for sale. I only notice it on that signature maybe because it is so wide.

    Waltham 88's show them off

On a few of the beautiful pictures listed, I notice the A.W.W.Co. it not centered or slanted or both. Why on the highest grade item like that, the company would let watches leave with dials like that? Or is it camera lens angle?

    Pocket watch storage suggestions?

I came a cross this post from several years ago since someone recently commented but thought I would comment on this reply. This piece of furniture is called a vesting cabinet. This is specific to Catholic churches. The drawers are not tall and are deep because the vestments worn by the...

$ Stone Crystal Movements by American Watch Co.

The large size you wrote are 100,000 and up. How about the undamaged small size values? How many survived small / large undamaged. Conceivably, 10 of each?

    E.T.&Co.

Thank you. I only ask because I saw pictures (which are no longer to be found anywhere) a while ago of a Chas. T. Parker movement with Appleton Tracy dial and the case was E.T.& Co. with matching low serial number to the movement. 18k yellow gold and very striking but I have not seen it...

    E.T.&Co.

Can anyone tell me who the maker is of the cases marked E.T.&Co. on the case of an early Appleton, Tracy Co. Waltham? Thanks

Van Woerd's Sawtooth Balance by American Waltham

Was the sawtooth balance incapable of adjusting to accuracy (design failure) or was there simply a cumbersome issue with ongoing adjustments of the balance itself? I've read both hypotheses. I can't imagine how the watch would be produced (whatever the small number was made with the sawtooth)...

Understanding Swiss Hallmarks on Abraham Colomby Fusee

Hello everyone, I have in my collection a beautiful verge fusee pocket watch. Name is Abraham Colomby. I have turned up several different examples on the internet, but what I am trying to determine without testing the watch is if the watch would be considered gold or gilt. The case is a...
