• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

    Puttin' it together

I haven't seen glued collets, but have certainly seen glued studs. If anyone has a clear photo of a glued collet, I would be interested in seeing that. Most modern collets I see are welded like this: Here's a glued stud: Cheers, Al

    American PW Moebius 9010?

I guess it depends on how you view things. For me personally, as long as the watch is working fine, I would get some use out of it for a few years, and then have it serviced before the warranty expires.

Hot "Fudging" a Balance Staff with Henry Fried.

Dewey, That's a good point regarding contemporaries - I'm certainly familiar with Archie's writings, and they are of good quality certainly. It is interesting that Fried gets the bulk of praise and recommendations I see around forums, mainly by non-watchmakers. Similar in the way lots of...

Hot "Fudging" a Balance Staff with Henry Fried.

I wonder if these things are a product of the times. I am assuming these were stated back when everyone owned a mechanical watch, there were watchmakers all over the place, and prices were cut throat cheap. So getting the job done quickly was priority #1, because anything else would mean you...

    Filling quartz movement with oil

If you don't see the benefit, then I would suggest you don't buy one. But if we are going to approach every purchase decision based on what is "beneficial" then realize that there's no benefit in using a 100 year old watch powered by a spring to tell time, when you can buy a $20 quartz watch...

    Filling quartz movement with oil

Yes, the movement is completely submerged. "The movement, dial and hands are immersed directly in a crystal-clear bath of oil. The watch is thus free from fogging, as there is no air inside the case." Here's an example of one model: Sinn Uhren: Modell UX Uses an ETA 955.652 It's a...

It can be done - some makers sell quartz watches filled with oil. One is German company Sinn... Sinn Uhren: HYDRO

    Crystal Replacement Woes

Right, so these can be useful, but you will never use it all. And again, nothing particularly Swiss about it.

    Crystal Replacement Woes

Yep - this is what assortments are all about - selling stuff that you will never use, along with some useful things. Doesn't matter if it's GS, SUC, Bestfit, etc. they pretty much are all this way if you buy the full package. Nothing particularly Swiss about it. Recently had a cushion cased...

    Crystal Replacement Woes

Who specifically was selling these? Can't say as I've ever seen a "Swiss" crystal cabinet or assortment, but I have a mostly useless GS one sitting right beside me as I type this...

Crystal with Nylon Gasket - what is the trick ?

As I said, this is not the first time I've had this happen - here's another one from a few years ago: Oddly enough it had just gone through the leak finder program, and said that it was okay to be checked in water. Before the chamber opened, I heard the pop, and the crystal had come right...

Crystal with Nylon Gasket - what is the trick ?

No, as I said in the post above I didn't remove the crystal during the service.

Crystal with Nylon Gasket - what is the trick ?

I just pressure tested a dive watch yesterday and it failed in the machine - the crystal had popped right out of the old seal. I could put the crystal back in with my fingers, so I have a new seal on the way. I didn't remove the crystal during service, so it appears that someone else has used...

Crystal with Nylon Gasket - what is the trick ?

Few things to keep in mind when setting crystals of this type... The crystal gasket goes in the case first, and often (depending on the brand/type) there will be a chamfer on the gasket that helps the crystal get started: You need a good press, with dies that line up properly - for thicker...

    Dial Washer Shims??

Curious and wanted to clarify - are you saying that is came with punches under the balance cock from the factory? I would find that difficult to believe, honestly. I've ordered, serviced, and sold many hundreds of these in watches (6497's and 6498's) and I've never seen one with anything like...

    Dial Washer Shims??

My advice to buyers is that unless you have proof in the form of documentation (not just the seller's word for it) of a service being completed by a known to be good service provider, then always account for the cost of a proper service when you decide how much to pay for the watch. If it turns...

    Dial Washer Shims??

Anything short of putting it back to original could be considered a "bodge"... I do agree if someone doesn't have the skill or confidence to effect a proper repair, better to shim than to do more damage.
