• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Decimal 21 Jewel Pocket Watch N. Beaudry & Fils Montreal

Hi, FWIW I recently had an Omega 21-jewel 19-lignes pocket watch, retailed by Prestons under their trademark Prestex. It wasn't the Regina plate layout but the more recognisable 19 lignes Brandt inspired movement. Piers

Gold train wheels....mechanically advantageous or simply aesthetically pleasing?

John, I understand the points that you make about high quality watches. But, the movement I posted here is actually a pre WW1 wrist watch Fontainemelon movement. It's not a higher grade piece, and I wonder why the gear train was ever produced in this manner. It surely must be purely for...

Gold train wheels....mechanically advantageous or simply aesthetically pleasing?

That's the point of my post Bernard, I don't know . Hence my queries as to the possible/probable construction of the wheels. You're right...they do look nice (imho) But...are they plated..or a gold/alloy combo? I guess there's no way to find out without removing them.... Piers

Gold train wheels....mechanically advantageous or simply aesthetically pleasing?

Hi John, This is one of the watches I have. It's not an actual bona fide trench watch but a similar sized inter-war piece....probably Fontainmelon? Regards, Piers

Gold train wheels....mechanically advantageous or simply aesthetically pleasing?

Thank you Bernhard. Yes...some other input would probably be helpful :-) I was under the impression that plating was more common. When you said 'massive', what did you mean? Thanks, Piers

Gold train wheels....mechanically advantageous or simply aesthetically pleasing?

Hi all, I recently had a discussion with someone about the mechanics of watch escapements, and the subject of gold/rose-gold train wheels came up. I have come across a number of Swiss movements, mainly wrist/trench watch sized with three gold train wheels, and the occasional pocket watch with...

Woerds Patent on small Waltham Riverside movement

Ok...thanks for that Clint. Just a standard manufactured part It's great to be able to identify smaller watch parts, especially if you don't see them that often. Piers.

Interesting Dwerrihouse & Carter verge to table-roller conversion....but exactly how old is it?

Here is what's underneath the balance cock....doesn't seem to be anything unusual...except for the length of the bottom of the staff....which I suppose is the norm for these conversions.s Piers.

Woerds Patent on small Waltham Riverside movement

Thanks Clint. I've since noticed that a number of his patents refer to setting mechanisms etc...things that you can't see! Regards, Piers

    Pocket Watch key....19thC Royal celebration.

Very nice..... I like that puzzle fob! As far as my key goes...I've seen a few flat conventional advertising type keys which celebrate the same event, but not one like mine. I'll post a pic of my collection later. Piers

Woerds Patent on small Waltham Riverside movement

Hi all, There are many threads referencing Woerds Patents, buy very few identifying specific ones. As far as I am aware, there is no actual list in existence of all the patent numbers registered ? Does anyone know if one of his patents referred to the device visible on this...

    Pocket Watch key....19thC Royal celebration.

Whilst on the subject of pocket watch keys, here's one I picked up very recently. Strangely topical. I wonder how many of these were originally made, and how many still exist...? Piers.

Interesting Dwerrihouse & Carter verge to table-roller conversion....but exactly how old is it?

Thanks Graham. You're right of course to ask that important question...what am I trying to match? And since you have raised those latter observations, I will take your advice and seek out a domed replacement. Meantime, I will take a photograph under the balance cock and see what's there. Watch...
