• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

    Help Letting down the MS...

That is what I stated with essentially... an empty case that when purchased, I thought was a 0s. SURPRISE!!! it was a coveted 6s early wristwatch case. The case screw marks matched with the 1890 Waltham 6s. So I placed one back into it.

    Help Letting down the MS...

It is certainly. Was able to find another period appropriate movement, albeit a 7 jewel.

    Help Letting down the MS...

That did the trick. Now I have different issues.... jewels for the escape, 4th and 3rd wheels are cracked/shattered. Like it was dropped on the dial side. Seesh. Couldn't see this until the wheels were out of the train. Oh well....

    Help Letting down the MS...

Normally letting down the mainspring on a watch is pretty straight forward..... How do you let the spring down in a model 1890 Waltham 6s movement?

WALTHAM 0 SIZE WINDING SLEEVE THREAD?

I now have a copy of the English edition and have found it to be informative. I also tracked down a copy of the Levins's book, the 1950 8th edition. Really great reference.

    WW Lathe Headstock issues

I'd suggest a copy of Archie Perkin's "Watch Makers Lathe and how to use it". There is a section on the care (disassembly and reassembly) of the lathe head. Perkin's book is much better in this regard than DeCarle's Lathe book. Join the NAWCC and borrow Perkin's book from the library (dues plus...

WALTHAM 0 SIZE WINDING SLEEVE THREAD?

Like Trim, I've been trying to hunt down this info too. Even wrote to the NAWCC research librarian recently. I did not receive this as a suggestion with the response to my inquiry. The above reply is far more satisfactory. Levin's book is in the library too. Ain't an inexpense book either but...

Enthusiast level watchmaker tool kit suggestions

tool acquisition is nearly a hobby in itself. What hasn't been said, is buy books too. De Carle and Fried are the better ones with discussions on tools. The Chicago School of Watch Making also has info on tools. Learning what the tools are is also helpful in deciding what you need. As things...

Mechanical WW Looking for basic learning resource in NAWCC library

There is what's know as the "Chicago School" by Sweazey. It was a home study course; I have a copy. It is in the library too. Look for 'Master watchmaking : a modern, complete, practical course'. Its available on CD and in the dead trees versions.

    Hamilton 16s hairspring

Thanks for moving this; was questioning where it would belong. I also got my hands on a copy of a vintage Marshall parts book and it too indicates that the hairspring, in fact the balance complete, will interchange between the two movements. Thanks to the others for their input. did either...

Do the hairsprings for the 992B and the 950B interchange? Thanks!

letting down the springs in a sz 37 Waltham

Hi Dave, Your suggestion for the roller jewel gauge is a serious consideration. In the 50+ movements that I have worked on (full tear-downs) this is the 1st time that I've needed these. My tool collecting is generally on an as needed basis, so I'll get one of those. Seems eBay had more of them...

letting down the springs in a sz 37 Waltham

Hi Dave, easier said then done... I know that the calipers I have have an 1/100s mm error in them. Fine for measuring crystals but not for something this small and needing this level of precision. What I'm hoping is that someone has a Waltham Material catalog and would look it up for me or if...

letting down the springs in a sz 37 Waltham

Does anyone have a roller jewel for this style movement? I fully disassembled it and the jewel was sheered off in the roller table.

letting down the springs in a sz 37 Waltham

Jerry, thank you for that. The movement like the one mentioned in the other post was wound as tight as can be. On top of this the movement was so gummed up that I had to remove the balance assembly and the pallet; letting the watch unwind itself some. Normally that would be a fast track to ruin...

Thank you again sderek for the help and the link to cousins. In my searching for technical information I am not sure why I didn't run across cousins already. Cheers!

Hi sderek, Thanks for your reply but I do not see on the Jules B site a part under the AS1903 listing for a "large drive wheel..."
