• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

How do I know if mainspring is usable ???

A rule of thumb: free mainspring diameter shall be min. 3x the barrel diameter to be still usable (older spiral form springs, not S-form springs). Frank

Watch Accuracy Meter limits on old watches...

Who shall know that? The developer of that app only, you should ask him, imo. Frank

What would be the acceptable beat error range on a vintage pocket watch?

That is how I understood their statement in the manual.

What would be the acceptable beat error range on a vintage pocket watch?

Skutt50, thank you :) This is not true. It is true for a half swing only, but is compensated by the same inverse error in the other half swing. Mr. G. B. Airy explained it already more than 100 years ago In my understanding this is the neutral point (relaxed hairspring). But obviously the line...

What would be the acceptable beat error range on a vintage pocket watch?

You are absolutely right, Karl. This issue is not yet realized by many, as nearly all TMs just offer ms as beat error. If you want to know, if xx ms is ok or not, that number does not yet tell too much (1ms however will be ok in any case). Essential is, how many degrees out of the middle is the...

Need Off the Shelf Beat Amplifier Watches or Clocks

Also a quick post: as you are running Win7, it comes with the "Audiorecorder" app as part of the OS. It makes recording and store to a file very easy. Don't need extra programs and other contorted maneuvers ;-) Frank

Need Off the Shelf Beat Amplifier Watches or Clocks

Ron, please forgive me that I am talking directly (as we are used to in my area). Your audio signals have no similarity to a clear watch ticking noise. They are fuzzy, distorted and much too noisy. I had to convert them to .wav but that should not be an issue. My suspicion is faulty microphone...

Crystal with Nylon Gasket - what is the trick ?

What is essential? - a quality press (upper/lower insert in one line, not tilted) - the right size gasket - the right size crystal Crystal + gasket must be 0.1 mm bigger than the case opening. E.g.: Sternkreuz gaskets are 0.35mm thick. A 31.0 mm crystal plus 2x 0.35mm gasket = 31.7 mm This...

Need Off the Shelf Beat Amplifier Watches or Clocks

Ron, just now I also listened to your audio file. What you have is no hum, it is just noise very highly amplified. The watch tics are barely higher than the noise. A filter as mentioned by John doesn't make the least difference here. Something is generally wrong with your setup. Your watch...

Need Off the Shelf Beat Amplifier Watches or Clocks

Ron, the link for download is in the QR-code - and here. Btw. this transistor's B is about 200. Power supply comes from the mic input of the PC. Just try it, you will be pleased. Frank

Need Off the Shelf Beat Amplifier Watches or Clocks

Hi Ron, making a DIY mic amplifier is more than easy. Here is a schematic from the manual of my free PC timing machine (see attached). The simple disc can be replaced by a cheap guitar clip mic. Frank

    Demagnetizing

Bernhard, I apologize, you are sooo true! I neglected one additional resistor and one capacitor - according the schematic of my Elma. Btw. my 1st demagnetizer I made from the 220V coil of a valve in an old washing machine. A sturdy and small unit. Today I still use it rarely to chase the hands...

    Mainspring strength questions

Don't worry about that! There is no "the white alloy spring". Some kinds are a tiny bit weaker, some a tiny bit stronger than steel springs. Generally they replace blue steel ones just fine. Frank

    Early Quartz Testing

Hello, according above data table, adjusting is useful only if the error is more than 0.13 s/d. So you will have to wait for 1 week at least: if your watch deviates more than 1 sec then, you may adjust (1s/7 days = 0.14 s/d). Frank

what is the best way to duplicate watch wheel?

Making a brass wheel is the minor problem, you still don't have the pinion! Casting is rather inappropriate for making wheels, I never heard of such. Exact sizing is not possible, you will get distortions in the round and most of all, the part will shrink by some arbitrary amount of 2...5%. Frank
