• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

    Illinois grade 181 balance staff

Project completed. It seems that the old Master that last worked on this watch did several modifications. First I believe the balance staff was shop made being its Dimensions were not even close to the staff that belonged in this watch. Two both the top and the bottom balance jewels were wrong...

    Illinois grade 181 balance staff

I measured the staffs to the dimensions in your chart and they seem to match very close. I will recheck the jewel seating but the cap jewel sets perfectly

    Illinois grade 181 balance staff

Hi Dave, thanks for replying. I have tried several of each the 114 & 662 but neither fit correct. They are both too short and the hub doesn’t fit the balance wheel. I could turn the hub do own a bit to fit but when I put the staff into the movement to fit it with just the balance bridge and...

    Illinois grade 181 balance staff

Hello, I am currently trying to replace a balance staff on a Illinois Grade 181 Model 5. from my research it looks as if it takes a staff 114lc or 662 sc in the pocket watch data base in Swigart it has the staffs numbered as 47609 Lc or staff 47606 sc. I have all of the mentioned staffs but...

Illinois Watch Co. 16 size numbered grades

Just to add to this thread. I recently picked up this 181. The data base says it’s a model5 quantity run 40, total production 140. It also has a Ball Model case which I’m sure is not original although the case screws match perfectly.

    Hamilton 974 timing

Job finished. Thank you all for your help. This was a great exercise for me in finding faults. Somewhere in this watches history someone must have altered timing screws. I would have never thought of removing temperature screws, but that put me on the right track. That got me a little over half...

    Hamilton 974 timing

Chris, as you suggested I removed the two small temperature screws closest to the balance arms and that seemed to gain it about 900 seconds. Would you now suggest I remove material from the meantime screws. What is puzzling to me is how the timing machine is reacting. It would seem as if the...

    Hamilton 974 timing

Yes, you are correct the timing machine is confused which i really don't understand, but when i run the movement for 24hrs on the bench its running 20 minutes slow. I will start to remove screws, that was going to be my last resort. I am sure the problem is in the escapement it has to be. As...

    Hamilton 974 timing

Dewey to add to your suggestion, The reason i moved the meantime screws in was that when i received the watch they were so far out they almost touched the balance cock. But i do believe being the serial numbers match the balance is correct. Unfortunately, i do not have another 974 or i would...

    Hamilton 974 timing

Thank you all for your feedback. I will try to answer some of your suggestions. >I only mentioned the collet touching the hairspring to show it was running slow even when it should have been running fast because of the shortened hairspring. >As i mentioned in the original post i did check the...
