"Old" Clock? Is it something special - or just mistreated?

The clock's reserve is above my top bid, so it remains unsold for now. I can't justify paying the asking price, so I'll have to be patient and see if the reserve comes within reach, or if my top price shifts upward.

    Novelty "cuckoo" - pendulum?

Yep, it's pretty short, but the bob is almost up behind the lower part of the case, less than one inch from the hanger. Still, I think it's very close now, so I'll let it run for a while, find a home for it (I've made a timber stand to hang it on, so it will effectively be a wall-mantel clock :)...

"Old" Clock? Is it something special - or just mistreated?

Thanks Tarant. Looking at those pics, and searching for others, it does look like this is probably missing some trimmings and accents. EDIT: Do you think it could be the one near the bottom of this page (Model 386)? Auction is tomorrow but I'm going for a low-ball bid at this stage as I can't...

    Novelty "cuckoo" - pendulum?

:) It was handy doing it that way because I could just add or subtract washers. Pendulum MKII has the washer and clip replaced with a small plastic tiddlywink, held by tape. This looks much better and weighs almost nothing. I've moved the new bob up the wire but the clock runs slow. I'm...

Walter Ceramic clock from Germany. Any info?

Thanks JTD. My uneducated guess was 70s/80s, so I think my friend will be happy with 50s/60s. It was advertised as an antique (aren't they all?!), but she never really expected that it was. She just likes it and it wasn't over-priced.

"Old" Clock? Is it something special - or just mistreated?

Looking at the original photos, it's possible there are several small nail holes near the top and bottom, as if there was some sort of trim at some stage.

    Novelty "cuckoo" - pendulum?

UPDATE: It appears to be running! I had to make a "gear puller" to remove the minute hand. I bashed a tiny piece of aluminium bar into shape then drilled a hole and cut a slot (I should have cut the slot before bending). I inserted a self-tapping screw, with the point slightly blunted, into the...

"Old" Clock? Is it something special - or just mistreated?

Thanks Burkhard, I think the movement would lift of as you suggest, but I didn't want to mess with it without knowing what it was. I like the cracked dial and probably wouldn't replace it. The case isn't really to my taste and I'd be tempted to put it in something else and maybe make it a...

"Old" Clock? Is it something special - or just mistreated?

I found this at an auction. I can see no markings and could not photograph the back of the movement - but it is so heavily tarnished, I'm not sure it would reveal any markings. To my untrained eye, it looks like a gem of an antique - but could it have just had a very hard life? Does it look...

Walter Ceramic clock from Germany. Any info?

My friend bought this Walter horse clock last week and asked me if I knew anything about it. I couldn't say much more than it was made in Germany - because it says so in the small print at the bottom of the dial. It stands about 20-25cm tall (~8-9") tall. I assume it is ceramic (or China?). It...

    Getting to know you guys.

At a bit over 50, I'm getting the feeling I might be one of the younger forum members :) I only began working on clocks just over a year ago when I found my first 400-day clock at a local auction. My wife loves them and always wanted one but we never knew where to get them. We now have 25 of...

    Novelty "cuckoo" - pendulum?

Thanks all. It looks like the dial might lever up so I'll investigate that further tomorrow. The minute hand appears to be "rusted" on and nothing I've done even hints at shifting it. I think I might have to look at making a puller of some description. I don't even know if that's in my skill...

    Novelty "cuckoo" - pendulum?

Ahh, but that brings me back to my original question - how do I get the movement out? I think the movement is fundamentally sound (yesterday's spring release notwithstanding) but I'd like to clean the fluff out of it and see exactly what's going on in there. The movement looks pretty much like...

    Novelty "cuckoo" - pendulum?

I can't even get the hands off :( When I tried to wiggle the minute hand off with popsticks, the mainspring suddenly released (which is interesting because I don't know how to release this sort of spring with a cam-type click). For a $1 clock, I can see this one is going to frustrate me. It's...

    Novelty "cuckoo" - pendulum?

I want to remove the movement so I can give it a bit of a clean and oil - but I'll be darned if I see how to get it out. It looks like I need to pry the dial off and there might be screws underneath but I'm not sure. Could the movement just be glued in? There are replacement mini novelty...

    Sussex (JERGER) copper alarm clock

This is another clock that we picked up as a bit of a joke because my wife liked it and the guy selling it at a swap-meet had $8 on it but begged us to take it for $2. The alarm wouldn't wind but when I got it home and opened it up, I noticed the spring had been over-UN-wound and was very...

Thank you both. The pic gives me a starting point to begin experimenting.

    Novelty "cuckoo" - pendulum?

I picked this up as a bit of a joke - my wife thought it was cute and it was $1 - but I need to know the specs for the missing pendulum and would also like to know what it is. Is it likely to be German, Swiss, Chinese...? The movement seems fundamentally sound but I can't find any pictures that...

    Peter Alarm Clock

I epoxied the hammer back on and it definitely has a better ring now. It still sounds dreadful, but I'm pretty sure that's how it's meant to sound. It would certainly get me out of bed in the morning - if I could sleep with the loud ticking :) I think this one is done. If only they were all so...
