• Important Executive Director Announcement from the NAWCC

The NAWCC Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Mr. Rory McEvoy has been named Executive Director of the NAWCC. Rory is an internationally renowned horological scholar and comes to the NAWCC with strong credentials that solidly align with our education, fundraising, and membership growth objectives. He has a postgraduate degree in the conservation and restoration of antique clocks from West Dean College, and throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to handle some of the world’s most important horological artifacts, including longitude timekeepers by Harrison, Kendall, and Mudge.

Rory formerly worked as Curator of Horology at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, where his role included day-to-day management of research and digitization projects, writing, public speaking, conservation, convening conferences, exhibition work, and development of acquisition/disposal and collection care policies. In addition, he has worked as a horological specialist at Bonhams in London, where he cataloged and handled many rare timepieces and built important relationships with collectors, buyers, and sellers. Most recently, Rory has used his talents to share his love of horology at the university level by teaching horological theory, history, and the practical repair and making of clocks and watches at Birmingham City University.

Rory is a British citizen and currently resides in the UK. Pre-COVID-19, Rory and his wife, Kaai, visited HQ in Columbia, Pennsylvania, where they met with staff, spent time in the Museum and Library & Research Center, and toured the area. Rory and Kaai will be relocating to the area as soon as the immigration challenges and travel restrictions due to COVID-19 permit.

Some of you may already be familiar with Rory as he is also a well-known author and lecturer. His recent publications include the book Harrison Decoded: Towards a Perfect Pendulum Clock, which he edited with Jonathan Betts, and the article “George Graham and the Orrery” in the journal Nuncius.

Until Rory’s relocation to the United States is complete, he will be working closely with an on-boarding team assembled by the NAWCC Board of Directors to introduce him to the opportunities and challenges before us and to ensure a smooth transition. Rory will be participating in strategic and financial planning immediately, which will allow him to hit the ground running when he arrives in Columbia

You can read more about Rory McEvoy and this exciting announcement in the upcoming March/April issue of the Watch & Clock Bulletin.

Please join the entire Board and staff in welcoming Rory to the NAWCC community.

Tiffany PW case housing a Hamilton 916 - how likely is that?

How likely is it that a Tiffany 18K PW case and Tiffany dial are a good original match with a Hamilton 916 movement, c1926? I have such a combination, with engraving dated 1927 and the movement c1926. I've searched around the Internet for evidence of a Tiffany case housing a Hamilton movement...

    Help identify Rolex Perpetual Oyster

Does this Rolex have a more specific name than "Rolex Oyster Perpetual"? Any idea of the date of production? There is nothing written on the back of the case nor between the lugs.

Private conversations - hanging out with friends.

I'd like to see a corner of this message board where NAWCC members can hang out with their old friends, and make new ones. The conversations would be private in that only NAWCC members would be party to them. I guess I'm talking about a virtual water cooler where we can just exchange some idle...

    Gruen pocket watch production dates

Anyone know of a database showing production dates for Gruen watches? I'm looking at 1920's and I know that Gruen were producing watches in USA and Switzerland, but for this purpose, I posted in American Pocket Watch section. Hope that's ok.

    The first American pocket watches

Does anyone here own either a Goddard or a Pitkin pocket watch? Between 1809 and 1817, Luther Goddard, of Shrewsbury, Mass., made about 500 verge watches. He went out of business because of cheap foreign competition. From 1838 to about 1841, the brothers James and Henry Pitkin at Hartford...

Omega case -what went in here?

Hi all, I have this rather nice Omega wristwatch case and I would like to find out what watch (or range of watches) would have gone into it. Does anyone have one similar, or any idea as to the vintage of this case, or which Omega watches would have gone with it?

    Accutron Astronaut dial markings

I have this astronaut up for auction in Japan at this time: The complete gallery of photos is here --> Click Here Someone has pointed out to me that the words Accutron and Bulova are printed in the 'wrong' order. Usually, where both words occur, it's Bulova above and Accutron below. I've...

Mechanical WW Accutron repairs - what does it take to do them?

Hi all, I asked Doug yesterday about Accutron repairs and discovered that he has around 40 years of experience with Accutron watches, so here is my question: how easy/difficult is it to learn Accutron maintenance and repairs? I'm thinking time, money, tools, training (self-study...

Congratulations to Kent Singer and Ed Ueberall, new NAWCC Fellows

I'm posting this in "Pocket Watches" because Kent Singer puts in a lot of time here, and I'm sure those he has helped (both NAWCC members and others) will appreciate knowing that he and Ed Ueberall were made NAWCC Fellows at the recent NAWCC National Convention. As a fellow-IHC 185 member Dr...

Is this a real Ernest Borel?

A friend (not a million miles from here) and I have a difference of opinion as to whether this is a fake or not. Can any wristwatch experts weigh in on this one? I reckon it's real, despite the scruffy bracelet. Has anyone ever seen a fake Ernest Borel? Ernest Borel ... Real or fake?
