• Important Executive Director Announcement from the NAWCC

The NAWCC Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Mr. Rory McEvoy has been named Executive Director of the NAWCC. Rory is an internationally renowned horological scholar and comes to the NAWCC with strong credentials that solidly align with our education, fundraising, and membership growth objectives. He has a postgraduate degree in the conservation and restoration of antique clocks from West Dean College, and throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to handle some of the world’s most important horological artifacts, including longitude timekeepers by Harrison, Kendall, and Mudge.

Rory formerly worked as Curator of Horology at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, where his role included day-to-day management of research and digitization projects, writing, public speaking, conservation, convening conferences, exhibition work, and development of acquisition/disposal and collection care policies. In addition, he has worked as a horological specialist at Bonhams in London, where he cataloged and handled many rare timepieces and built important relationships with collectors, buyers, and sellers. Most recently, Rory has used his talents to share his love of horology at the university level by teaching horological theory, history, and the practical repair and making of clocks and watches at Birmingham City University.

Rory is a British citizen and currently resides in the UK. Pre-COVID-19, Rory and his wife, Kaai, visited HQ in Columbia, Pennsylvania, where they met with staff, spent time in the Museum and Library & Research Center, and toured the area. Rory and Kaai will be relocating to the area as soon as the immigration challenges and travel restrictions due to COVID-19 permit.

Some of you may already be familiar with Rory as he is also a well-known author and lecturer. His recent publications include the book Harrison Decoded: Towards a Perfect Pendulum Clock, which he edited with Jonathan Betts, and the article “George Graham and the Orrery” in the journal Nuncius.

Until Rory’s relocation to the United States is complete, he will be working closely with an on-boarding team assembled by the NAWCC Board of Directors to introduce him to the opportunities and challenges before us and to ensure a smooth transition. Rory will be participating in strategic and financial planning immediately, which will allow him to hit the ground running when he arrives in Columbia

You can read more about Rory McEvoy and this exciting announcement in the upcoming March/April issue of the Watch & Clock Bulletin.

Please join the entire Board and staff in welcoming Rory to the NAWCC community.

    Stabilize or Repaint Schatz Base?

Hello, all. Attached are photos of a 1952 Schatz. My intention is to clean and restore - as possible - this clock. As you can see from the photos, both the paint and decals on the dial and pillars are in excellent condition. The paint is also holding on the pendulum balls. However, the base...

    Please help identify this clock

Good morning: I purchased recently for a pittance this interesting little clock. It is a curiosity. I have not found any maker’s marks. It is not working. When plugged into socket, motor gets warm with no action. I would like to find a replacement motor. I will appreciate deeply any insights. John

    G. K. cuckoo minute hand

Friends: The attached photos are of a G. K. cuckoo movement currently under restoration. The movement came without hands or related hardware. As I have never seen such a minute hand tube as this before, I would appreciate your help in understanding how the minute hand is secured correctly. I...

Joseph: Thanks for your suggestion. Admittedly, I am concerned about the drying time for the oil based product - even with the drier additive. John

Good afternoon: I do not have Karl Kochman’s book referenced above. Would someone kindly tell me exactly what size tube of burnt sienna artist’s oil paint Kochman states to use in his formula for stain on page 152? Thank you. John

    Junghans chime assembly and rods

Good morning. An acquaintance told me recently that her clock would not chime. She asked me to take a look. It was an easy diagnosis - the hammer assembly, hammers, and rods are missing! The clock was purchased at an antique show a decade ago. An unscrupulous seller did not...

    Antique Cuckoo Clock

Good morning. I am the proud new owner of an older cuckoo. Given my limited knowledge of cuckoos, I am guessing it is circa 1875. No doubt someone with greater knowledge will offer a more accurate date estimate. The carvings are in remarkable condition. The case needs attention as the...

    Junghans model and finials

Good morning, friends. Over the holidays, generous friends gave me their small Junghans regulator. The date mark indicates second-half of 1906. The husband is an Army veteran. He and his wife purchased the clock while stationed in Germany. It has not run for some time. They wanted to...

What am I doing wrong with solder?

Thank you, everyone, for the insights and suggestion. At this moment, I am in information overload. Nonetheless, as I read and study these and, potentially, additional posts, I am confident you will ave taught me well. With luck - I will find time this weekend to begin again and experiment...

What am I doing wrong with solder?

Good evening, I am a hobbyist learning gear tooth replacement. I carefully removed a tooth from a gear along with a portion of the brass below. I crafted a brass blank to fit snugly into the void. Both pieces were cleaned. The edges of the two pieces where they are to be joined were brushed...

    Ingraham "Pansy" applique

Several months back, I purchased an Ingraham "Pansy." On the "Pansy," I am accustom to seeing a thermometer at the top; however, this clock has what seems an unusual applique. As you will see in the attached photos, the applique has (from the top and going down) a "Star of David," then a...

    Six new clocks

Hello, Steven. As to the base of the Daisy, it is a level and not a plaque. Unfortunately, there is no label on the back of the clock. I, too, turned to the antiqueclockpriceguide.com for help with identifying the clock as the base did not match a "Pansy." Thanks for your help in trying to...

    Six new clocks

Good morning. Sooner or later Lady Luck smiles on us. A couple is preparing to move and they have no desire to move their clocks again. Therefore, I was able to purchase six clocks for the amazing price of $225. In one of the attached photos you will see all six clocks. Back row, left to...

ST Crystal Regulator Empire No. 7

Okay. The movement came out perfectly - thanks to Bruce. It has been cleaned and reassembled. However, I cannot get the strike hammer in the rest position. I have let the power down and adjusted the wheels in the strike train six times tonight! What am I not doing? What may I be doing wrong?
