• Important Executive Director Announcement from the NAWCC

The NAWCC Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Mr. Rory McEvoy has been named Executive Director of the NAWCC. Rory is an internationally renowned horological scholar and comes to the NAWCC with strong credentials that solidly align with our education, fundraising, and membership growth objectives. He has a postgraduate degree in the conservation and restoration of antique clocks from West Dean College, and throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to handle some of the world’s most important horological artifacts, including longitude timekeepers by Harrison, Kendall, and Mudge.

Rory formerly worked as Curator of Horology at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, where his role included day-to-day management of research and digitization projects, writing, public speaking, conservation, convening conferences, exhibition work, and development of acquisition/disposal and collection care policies. In addition, he has worked as a horological specialist at Bonhams in London, where he cataloged and handled many rare timepieces and built important relationships with collectors, buyers, and sellers. Most recently, Rory has used his talents to share his love of horology at the university level by teaching horological theory, history, and the practical repair and making of clocks and watches at Birmingham City University.

Rory is a British citizen and currently resides in the UK. Pre-COVID-19, Rory and his wife, Kaai, visited HQ in Columbia, Pennsylvania, where they met with staff, spent time in the Museum and Library & Research Center, and toured the area. Rory and Kaai will be relocating to the area as soon as the immigration challenges and travel restrictions due to COVID-19 permit.

Some of you may already be familiar with Rory as he is also a well-known author and lecturer. His recent publications include the book Harrison Decoded: Towards a Perfect Pendulum Clock, which he edited with Jonathan Betts, and the article “George Graham and the Orrery” in the journal Nuncius.

Until Rory’s relocation to the United States is complete, he will be working closely with an on-boarding team assembled by the NAWCC Board of Directors to introduce him to the opportunities and challenges before us and to ensure a smooth transition. Rory will be participating in strategic and financial planning immediately, which will allow him to hit the ground running when he arrives in Columbia

You can read more about Rory McEvoy and this exciting announcement in the upcoming March/April issue of the Watch & Clock Bulletin.

Please join the entire Board and staff in welcoming Rory to the NAWCC community.

    Telechron Electroalarm Repair Questions

I have been working on a Telechron Electroalarm for about 2 years. It has a good motor but the coil is defective. I finally found a good coil for it in a derelict Telechron alarm clock that had a built in light. This coil will make the rotor turn and the defective rotor that came out of the...

Need disassembly insight on United Clock Company novelty clock

I have a United Clock Company "fireplace" clock, as shown below. The motor runs fine but the train does not move. You can see that an extension runs the color wheel which creates the flickering flame effect in the fireplace. This will turn intermittently. I am surmising that the cheap...

    Telechron Telechron runs backward. Why?

I am in the process of getting an old Telchron Model 700 Electroalarm running. I have posted it about a month ago on this board. It seems to have a bad B2 rotor and a bad coil. Rather then get the rotor restored I thought I would search the local flea markets, yard sales and junk stores for...

Telechron Help With A Telechron 700 Electrolarm

I recently picked up a Telechron 700 for 20 bucks. Cabinet is in good shape, but clock doesn't work. Taking it apart was straightforward, except it took me a week to ease the hour hand off the post - it seemed to be welded on. The B2 rotor is froze, and the coil shows open when tested with...

Other PW Gruen "music" pocket watch with Reuge music box

I was recently given a relatives Gruen pocket watch. It has a built in Reuge music box which I believe is mounted on the watch back. I would like to know how to remove this particular case back. It will screw about a third of a turn and stop . I am reluctant to put too much force to it lest...

18s Keywind "Manhattan" - who made this thing?

I just bought this gem on our favorite on line auction site for cheap. All I wanted was the case, but now I have the movement, I'm curious to know from whence it sprang. It looks American to me, and the jewels look genuine. Hairspring appears to be busted off and hanging. Can anyone shine the...

A common watch symptom - what might it mean?

I have had several movements that run with poor amplitude, but if the mainspring is fully wound, and you give the crown another little twist, tightening the spring a bit more, then hold the crown there, they take off and run with a good swing. Until you release the crown. I've seen this in 2...

Some Questions on a Waltham Grade 636

This is a model 1908 that has some features that are new to me. First motor barrel I have worked on, but it was easy to figure out once I recognized what it was. However, I'm curious about this screw on the underside of the train bridge which apparently holds the escape wheel upper jewel...

Elgin 16s Bridge Model parts compatibility

I have an Elgin Grade 241, model 6 class 33 movement, serial # 10498349. It arrived with a balance and hairspring encrusted with rust, running with excellent amplitude and gaining 15 minutes an hour. After doing all I could to rehab the balance and hairspring, I decided it needs a...

Waterbury Long Wind Series E repair suggestions

I am a big fan of the Waterbury Long wind, a dollar watch with a 9 foot long spring that drives the whole movement to rotate around inside the case each hour. I searched for one for a long time, got an incomplete one, then a complete one that needed some repair. It now runs well and keeps...

Some questions on a duplex escapement.

I have a Waterbury long wind series E. It's the watch with the 9 foot long mainspring and the revolving carriage - a poor man's tourbillion. It also has a duplex escapement. It's running now after a series of small repairs. But either the spring is weak or else there is some resistance...

Help Identifying Seth Thomas 6S (?) MOvement

I've had this nice looking little movement kicking around for awhile. The movement measures about 34mm, while the dial is 38mm. I'm guessing it needs a special case. It's a low jewel count, but awful nicely finished with the gold flashing, and porcelain dial. I can wind and set it, balance...

    Illinois 404 -405-406 dial interchange?

I have a number of Illinois 12s 406 movements, all of which have metal dials in poor shape. Illinois metal dials seem to be prone to some kind of internal rot, most of the ones I see are in poor shape. Does anyone know if the dials from grade 404 and 405 will fit the 406? I see a couple of...
