    Stumped by a Schatz 49

Congratulations David. I have several of these running and several that refuse to run no matter how much effort a brilliant ideas I put in. I am convinced the condition of the clock is far more important than my interventions.

Can anyone help me identify and date his longcase clock found in a relatives house? Why does this long are clock have winding holes in the dial? Is it a fusee?

    Bent EW pivot

Worked on it today, getting nowhere. When you say “hold the plate at an angle to horizontal” does that mean “not horizontal”, like maybe 20 or 30 degrees off from horizontal. I am not feeling a wobble, in part because the pivot hole is larger than the pivot, allowing about 15 degrees of...

    Bent EW pivot

I have been wrestling with a Schatz 49 for a few weeks now. I suspect it has a bent EW pivot, since it will run fine for about 3/4 of a EW rotation, but then takes a gentle nudge to the Ew to resume. Visually, I don’t detect any bent teeth. I don’t have a lathe, but have a friend who has one...

New to me JUF 400 day clock s/no 71759

Great point. All my bad experience with ammoniated cleaner is post WWII. that is a very impressive collection you have.

Your right. I found a copy of Joe’s book for $80 and did not buy it. I understand what you mean about all of us doing things slightly differently. At any rate, thanks for your help and contributions.

    Forum Thoughts

I am amazed at the knowledge, experience, and expertise shared on this forum. There are several contributors that repeatedly, generously, and patiently help us beginners. Wayne, Schatznut, and KuttinSA and others. Several of the repair techniques come up repeatedly. Does anyone think it...

And I have had a couple of experiences using ammoniated cleaner in a ultrasonic cleaner that has left once shiny plates very dull.

    Pivots under the microscope

I assume that is sample #6 in the article Stan sent, "burnished with oil". Great pictures at several levels of magnification. I have alot of respect for a guy who tells me 20x is too much magnification, and sends me pictures at 1,000x

    Pivots under the microscope

Thank you for the articles. The images and techniques are fascinating and helpful. Although unstated, I assume all the different techniques were applied on a lathe. After looking at these images, I am downgrading the quality of my pivots from a 2 to a 1 or maybe even a 0, even when viewed...

    Pivots under the microscope

Thanks Kurt. After I posted my message and found your post from 3 years ago. These pictures are what I thought I would see. If the pivots in these photos are a 10 mine are a 2 at best. I wonder if I can get there without a lathe.

    Pivots under the microscope

After a dozen or so successes, I have started having trouble keeping recent purchases (a Schatz standard, a Made in Germany, and a Kundo mini) running. Recently I started polishing pivots with a Dremel in a drill press sort of mount, using silicone disks. I thought these discs might be...

I have to say, the clock on the right is the most beautiful one I have ever seen. You are fortunate to own it!

Thanks all. I did not see any other printer information on the label. It was Winsted Conn., so we’ll go with the 1870’s or so

Can any one give me a guess at a date range for the attached. It is 30 hour, ogre driven time and strike. Don’t have my tools with me so can’t get to a picture of the movement, other than what you might see through the window in the center of the dial.

    Mainspring Wind Direction

I think I found the problem. The first wheel rotates freely around its arbor. Those two pieces are not attached to each other. It is always something. Thanks everyone for your advice about the mainspring.

    Mainspring Wind Direction

I’ll work on a smoother arc on the inner end. I do think both end are caught on their lugs. If I hold the barrel with my gloved hand, and wind it, I create tension and it “springs” back when I release it. It is a. brand new spring. How much do I need to worry about a bulge in the barrel...

    Mainspring Wind Direction

Is this Schatz 49 Mainspring wound in the right direction? Because of the orientation of the lug on the winding arbor, I don’t see how the mainspring can be installed in any other direction. I’ve got something wrong and can’t figure it out. When I install it between the plate, it just spins...
