    Wright of Cambridge wall clock

That's really useful, thank you. I'll collect your points into a document and take a print out for the clock repairer I give the clock to. I'm not sure I can afford a complete overhaul but I'll ask for a quote on cleaning and repairing the fusee and checking what else needs doing. Thanks again...

Ahhh thank you. Sorry for being obtuse yesterday, I'd been at the rum.

Yes I think so, if I let the pendulum swing from side to side it advances the escapement so the wheel advances by one notch as you'd expect it to. That could bend a tooth?

Yes indeed, sorry I'm easily pleased :( But at the other end the pendulum does also advance the ratchet nicely.

It turns happily and feels as if it would wind up the gut really smoothly if the gut weren't broken :)

Interesting, thank you all. I couldn't see a definition of "English Dial Clock" although it’s English, has a dial and is certainly a clock. The English stands for English movement? I love the fusee, simple and clever solution to the problem. Interesting too that it’s a drop dial thank you –...

    Wright of Cambridge wall clock

Hello people. Another clock, another question. I acquired an old pendulum wall clock along with other things in an auction box. It’s a Wright of Cambridge which I can’t see any references to on line. Bits keep falling off what with Cornwall being so damp that the glue holding the frame...

You lot, are as I noted, really impressive. Changing the polarity did indeed work :) . Thinking about it, I suppose the magnets repelling at top of swing would have a slightly shorter period than them attracting at top of swing. Just as well since I still can't see that spring.

With this and the last post ... you people are impressive I have to say, and yes you recall correctly I do indeed have no idea whether my positive is positive and my negative is negative :) As phase 1 I have moved the battery away from the coil and it does seem to be ok so far (12 hours so...

:) Well yes indeed. Cornish time is 20 minutes later than Sussex time (I used to live in Sussex and it's actually 20 years but we'll let that pass). I put our problems down to the railways in the 1800s having to standardize everything to London time. Bah. Midday is when the sun is overhead...

Me again. The clock seems to be running a couple of minutes a day slow. I initially thought it might be because I had a proper 1.5V battery in so the pendulum had a wider swing. I swapped it for a rechargeable one, though, and it's the same. I've screwed the pendulum weight up as far as it will...

Ta :) I had another thought. The steel core will presumably have a relative permeability of 1000. So that will multiply the rise time correspondingly so it's not at all negligible. Meaning that the voltage will actually presumably reach maximum value while the contact is being made and the...

    Kundo Kundo Electromagnetic

Ah well I live in Cornwall and have a large garden (aka "field") so I have extra sheds - up to five so far :). Thanks for the note on potential problems with nearby metal things - something else I wouldn't have thought of. Multimeter with inductance range would be interesting - I have an...

    Kundo Kundo Electromagnetic

Yes I'm looking forward to trying to fiddling with it a bit to get the timekeeping exact. I will soon replace 1.2 V AAA with 1.5 V AA battery to see how that changes things. I'd imagine it would give a bit larger kick each period. I did also (for no apparent reason) work out from...

Sorry about the delay answering this, I didn't get an e-mail message alerting me to it. Yes I'm assuming a couple of years is hopelessly overoptimistic. It's been going a couple of weeks on an AAA rechargeable so far though :) . It's also only lost a minute in four days since I adjusted it...
