There is something else strange about this clock that I have not seen before and that I just noticed. Two of the weights are marked 275 and the third is marked 265. The owner says they are original but did not know they were different. The manual - if any - is no longer available.
I have the...
Cleaned and smoothed the U joint and all working again. Doors slam as designed. In another ten years this will need a bushing where the drive shaft is held at an angle near the music box. That fitting is a simple, thin piece of blued steel with a hole in it. The drive shaft is standard annealed...
Rather than steel wool - I use 0000 Brass Wool on brass. There is not a lot of difference, but I think it does a better job with less scratching since the part and the wool are the same metal. You can order it online. Occasionally you can find at paint supply houses.
I also use Brass Wool...
Thanks -
Am experimenting with similar using blue painter's tape on the inside of the door edge. If that works well for the owner I will replace it with something more permanent like clear packing tape.
There are finely crafted coiled brass springs on the barn doors. I don't want to mess with them, but the owner wants the doors to close more quietly since the slams wake him up. I am thinking a bit of felt around the edge where it hits the front board might work, but that keeps the doors just...
Thanks for the note on what it is called. First Ump-pah band for me. Are the barn doors supposed to slam shut really hard? I suppose that means it is working properly - LOL
Thanks - I was wondering about leaving it dry. It seems to be the point of failure right now. The time and bird are fine, but the music is slow and uneven. I suspect it was lubed at some point and that caused the build up of gunk. There is wear beginning in the universal slot and on the pin...
This chalet cuckoo has a Regula 25 movement also stamped Schmeckenbecher. In addition to the cuckoo it has a music box and the rotating platform with the three person band with two doors.
What is new to me is that all of the controls for the music box are attached to the side of the Regula 25...
I think the logo on this movement is one used by Kienzle? This clock was bought in Berlin during the Berlin air lift and brought back to the US by the father of the current owner. The pendulum rod is mostly wood, but the top has a steel rod attached that goes through the crutch foot and hangs...
Perhaps the 1807 date on the dial might then represent a celebration of his birth - as in the beginning of his "time"? Being born in December 1806, he would probably have been baptized in early 1807.
I also have a Gilbert with the 1807 on the dial. I was told that it represented some sort of "patent" date on the movement, but the explanation regarding the origin of the original company sounds more likely.
That is interesting - but I think you were correct the first time. From the center of the hands to the bottom of the V is just over 18 inches.
The clock is now running on time with a new suspension spring and hanger and the pendulum CG at 14 1/4 inches from the center of the hands and the...
Thanks Steven - I first thought 1920 as well and the 18 was the pendulum length, but the owner clamed he was told 1820 - probably from looking at the stamps on the plates. Since Gilbert didn't really come into existence until 1860s, the 1820 date didn't make any sense.
The 18 as pendulum...
