What are the best 400 day clocks when it comes to quality

I agree that the 49er Schatz clocks are the best among the post-wwII 400-day products, compared to Hermle, Kern or Baduf, but you can see the cost savings of mass production. Gustav Becker clocks seem to cover a very wide range of quality. Here, too, the early ones are much better made, but...

small four glass 400 day clock

Mun, thank you for sharing the pictures, very interesting, I have never seen escapement wheels of this type (means short teeth) before in 400 day clocks, they rather look like a standard pendulum- or alarm-clock escapement. So may be this one is original to the clock, the anchor with some...

small four glass 400 day clock

Kurt, Mun, Thanks for the feedback, In my view, the escapement wheel is not original, apparently it is too large in diameter, so the pallets of the anchor were moved and the eccenter position of the pivot was rotated upwards to compensate this. In addition, the anchor is quite messed up by...

small four glass 400 day clock

Thanks, you're right, it is plate 1631, didn't see that. The pendulum weight is 190 g, with a solid brass disc. Before thnking about the suspension spring size I'll have to fix that escapement issue, not easy to come by, I suppose... pahel

small four glass 400 day clock

hi all my latest challenge is this 4-glass 400-day clock with a rather unusual movement, manufacturer unknown, no marks, sn is 737. The fastening of the ratchet is also strange, it is only held by a pin, no bridge as usual, a construction that scares me a bit. There is a plaque on the front of...

    blue faced Schatz 49

acquired this Schatz "49"er for spares, as some parts are interchangeable with older JUF movements. Since it came in a very good condition, nearby untouched (even the origial varnish is still on the plates), I decided to keep this one alive, as It just needed a new suspension and runs fine...

    400 day ID help

Eric Thanks for answering, There are no markings in the pendulum, but it is made of solid turned brass and quite heavy, so i wonder about the correct size for the suspension. I've seen these repro blocks on ebay, unfortunately it's not inexpensive, that would be as much as i've paid for the...

    400 day ID help

hi all, this clock came to me in a very poor condition, though it seems worth to bring it back to life. Most difficult part was a broken pendulum hook. The movement looks like a typical JUF, but the upper suspension bracket (pic 1) and the disc pendulum are different from what I've seen on JUF...

Art Nouveau Dial 400 Day Clock

Eric, I recently found this former contribution Very old Kienzle showing a similar clock, apart from the outside click and the associated wheel arrangement. In the end, I tend to believe, that your above stated estimation is correct, probably Kinzle started with a copy of the JUF movement, maybe...

Art Nouveau Dial 400 Day Clock

Eric, thanks for telling your thoughts, your theory sounds plausible, could be a good reason to explain this, though at that time, I suppose, Kienzle already had a quite prolific production of 400 day clocks with their own specific wheel-design, probably for the reasons you've mentioned. So why...

Art Nouveau Dial 400 Day Clock

I've checked my JUF clocks for that, didn't find any indication of Kienzle-made wheels in the above mentioned characteristics. Still remains the question of the uncommon low serial number, as I don't think this clock is one of the earliest Kienzle Production.. . pahel

Art Nouveau Dial 400 Day Clock

Eric, Thanks for seeking out this final evidence, I ve learned a lot about clock id and I'm happy, to know the actual face of my disguised wanttobeajuf kienzle..now. May be it would help, to add this plate to the records, to help the next confused owner of this movement. Pahel

Art Nouveau Dial 400 Day Clock

forgot to add the picture of the kienzle frontplate, there the minute gearwheel is solid, different from what we see in the pics above.

Art Nouveau Dial 400 Day Clock

Eric, thanks for answering, your conclusion is rather interesting, I did never hear of JUF adaptions by Kienzle, may be there was a small amount of these at some time, for what reasons ever, that would give a good explanation for the low serial number. Again, compairing a "typical" Kienzle with...

Art Nouveau Dial 400 Day Clock

Eric, thank you for answering, concerning the holes in the frontplate, I was talking about the small ones between the screws on top and those beside the lower right srew (looking at the frontplate). I didn't see that before, neither on JUF nor on a Kienzle pre ww! mvt.. may be we're talking...
