    Original Antique or Fake ?

Thanks RM, you confirm my suspicions exactly. I forewarned my nephew that it likely was a "knock off" as we refer to fakes in Ireland. I doubt if he cares too much as he likes it. I appreciate your comments and feedback.

    Original Antique or Fake ?

My nephew liked the look of this clock/barometer combination and paid 300 Euro for it at a house clearance auction recently. The former owner, deceased, was a university professor who traveled extensively especially in Asia. It is 5 inches wide, 4 inches high, and two inches thick. It is made...

    Horological Best Practices

Does a relatively concise list of Horological Best Practices exist? The Dos and Do Nots of clock repair. For example, in my relatively short Horological journey, I have adopted some basic principles. 1/. Be meticulous when cleaning, especially pivots, pivot holes/oil sinks, and pinions. 2/. Use...

    Refreshing Old Springs

Firstly, thank you to all who contributed. I have learned from the thread and I will not be ever trying to "refresh" an old spring. Secondly, what a Dumbo I am. I will never post a thread first thing in the morning again without proper deliberation. What was I thinking about winding the spring...

    Refreshing Old Springs

Is it possible to "refresh" old or tired main springs by winding them as tightly as possible on an arbour, retaining them in that position with a clip, and temper them? Thank you. Kieran

    Vienna Regulator Enamel Face.

Thanks Shutterbug, I can always depend on you for a response. I have already tried Cousins without success, also Meadows & Passmore. My son is fluent in German and I have asked him to trawl through some of German/Austrian eBay equivalents. I'm quite prepared to wait so will continue to check...

    Vienna Regulator Enamel Face.

I was bequeathed a Vienna Regulator style clock from a late aunt recently which had been in her family for 60+ years. The German movement, circa 1920, is of quite a high quality, though abused over time with wood, wire, and nails used to hold it together. I have managed to do quite a good job on...

    How To Remove Brass Housing.

Thanks, Kevin, yes, there were two such tiny brass pins which I managed to remove but still, it would not budge. Kieran.

    Approximate Age of Clock.

The gong had been badly bent so I had to take it off to straighten and can confirm that there are no markings on it. I suspect the clock had not been cleaned since new and had run without striking for several years. Wheel 1 on the striking train had a bent arbor and some of the trundle pins were...

    How To Remove Brass Housing.

Hopefully, I have this in the correct forum, rather than General Clock Discussion. Please see the photograph of a small French mantle clock, timepiece only. I am trying to remove the brass housing from the wooden case without doing further damage. It came to me partially mangled and I do not...

    Approximate Age of Clock.

I would like to be able to approximately "age" this clock, which I believe to be German. Absolutely no identifying marks except for the gong which has Schwaben Gong heavily embossed onto it. The three bottom glass panels are flat with beveled edges and a few bubbles scattered throughout, which...

    Recognise This Clockmaker's Motif ?

Not a particularly good photograph but I think sufficiently legible........Can anyone identify the maker, please? It's the only marking of any sort on a "Vienna Regulator" which has been in the family for over 60 years at least. I believe it to be German and pre 1900. Thank you. Kieran.

    Brass or Steel ?

Thanks for your replies/suggestions. Steel with brass, brass with steel will be my standard going forward.

Accurately Locating New Lever Platform Escapement

Thanks for your reply Shutterbug, before embarking upon your suggestion I decided to simulate as best I could an idea that I got while out on my early morning walk. Photo 1 shows the escapement held in a vice, photo 2 shows the backplate positioned over it, depthed to it's maximum. I felt this...
