phlamingokid:
The Hamilton grade 940 was a very popular, high grade watch of the first two decades of the twentieth century, meeting all the requirements for railroad time service. Well over 200,000 were made. According to information in "Hamilton Hand-Written Serial Numbers No. 1 To 824,700, by Col. George E. Townsend," Roy Ehrhardt, Heart of America Press, Kansas City, MO, 2000 (Still in print - see Heart of America Press), serial number 575391 was built in about 1907. A factory catalog description of the grade 940 can be seen on pages 6 & 7 in the 1912 Hamilton Hand Book (courtesy of Duke University's "Emergence of Advertising in America" website). Note that the watch was sold as a movement only. This means that the buyer picked out the case from the jeweler at the time of sale. If you tell us about the markings on the inside of the case itself, we may be able to tell you more about it. As kirxklox said, you have a nice watch, don't let it get away, especially if its a family heirloom. Kent [This message has been edited by Kent (edited 06-30-2002).]
