Default Ball Hamilton 938

The run of Ball Hamilton's from 8701-8800 mark the debut of the ORRS trademark.

This is an important Ball run and I don't believe we have had a thread featuring the great PL's and occasional Ball & Co watches found in this run.

# 8774, the second of three reported Ball and Co marked ORRS watches can be seen at:

http://williamkapp.tripod.com/id34.htm

Everyone has probably already seen that watch in previous threads but the discussion got sidetracked by my boorish attempt to claim it was the first , not second Ball & CO ORRS.

My apologies to Ed and Kent.

Maybe this time we can stick to the watches themselves. I would love to see some of those 8 reported Private Label's posted here. Most of the NAWCC members have already seen some of those pics on CD or in Bulletin 338 but others may not have had the chance to enjoy them.

happy hunting,

Bill Kapp

Terrific thread Bill and I'm also interested in hearing anything more about this early grade 938 Hamilton-Ball run.

There is a photo of one of the jeweler marked examples from this run (serial #8741 marked to A. Bach of Sandusky OH) from the late Don King's collection at these links ...

Regarding early Ball RR markings, there is one Howard-Ball which is marked "Ball's RR Standard, Ball & Co., Cleveland" on the movement and this movement is pictured in some of the earliest Shugart price guides. It is serial number 226221 and from what I've heard was the only Howard-Ball to be marked this way on the movement. This serial number is listed in the online Howard records as being an April 1893 sale to Ball.

So this one Howard doesn't quite have the "Official RR Standard" phrase, but comes close by having the "RR Standard" part.

Fred

Fred,

Thanks for those links. Is there a link to an index so that I could browse that info.org and see other watches archived there?

I don't have any of the early Shugarts, they got thrown away as they fell apart over the years.

Does anyone know where that watch is and if we can get pics?

Here is a link to the member archive section of the nawcc.info.org page ...

http://www.nawcc-info.org/members.htm

... and the two pages for Don King's collection are near the top of the list on the left. There are a few interesting Ball watches among the other member's pages so these are worth a look, but I don't think there is any others like Don's that have a particular focus on Ball.

One of the nice things about the first couple issues of the Shugart books is that they each had a couple pages of color photos of rare and interesting watches. I see the old Shugart issues sometimes at local and regional NAWCC shows for a few dollars each and this might be a good way to turn one up.

I don't know where #226221 is and I don't think I've ever seen another picture of the movement except the one in Shugart's, or a picture or even description of what dial it has.
